PAGCOR shuts down false claims of POGO reopening

0

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) has issued a strong warning against fraudulent messages claiming that Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGOs) are set to reopen.

PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro H. Tengco clarified that there is no truth to these claims and urged the public to be cautious of scammers attempting to deceive potential investors.

According to Tengco, some individuals are spreading false information, promising investors a limited number of POGO licenses and falsely claiming that these operations will be managed directly under PAGCOR. He stressed that POGOs remain banned, with no plans to reinstate them now or in the foreseeable future.

Tengco advised anyone receiving such messages or letters to report them immediately to PAGCOR, the police, or other law enforcement agencies. He emphasized that these fraudulent schemes are targeting investors with demands of up to Php50 million in supposed attorney’s fees, consultation, and assessment costs for securing a POGO slot.

He reiterated that under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., POGOs will not be reopening, and PAGCOR is not processing, nor will it entertain, any applications related to offshore gaming operations. The public is urged to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to these deceptive tactics.

Macau January GGR totals $2.27B, down by 5.6% yearly

0

Macau’s gross gaming revenue in January amounted to MOP18.25 billion ($2.27 billion), an annual drop of 5.6 percent.

January was largely expected to see an uptick, due to the Chinese New Year holiday falling partially within the month, prompting strong visitation and expectations for increased gaming and non-gaming spend.

The January figure amounts to a 0.3 percent rise from December’s GGR figure. It also marks the first full month of GGR results under Macau’s new leadership, which changed hands on December 20th, and includes part of the Chinese New Year takings.

The CNY Golden Week period officially commenced on January 28th and runs until February 4th, with an expected 5 million border crossings during the period. However, typically visitation peaks in the later days of the holiday.

Macau’s primary market is mainland China.

Analysts at Citigroup had previously expected January’s GGR to reach some MOP17.5 billion ($2.2 billion), about 70 percent of the level recorded in January 2019, mostly influenced by seasonal factors. Analysts at Morgan Stanley had a more optimistic outlook of MOP18.8 billion ($2.3 billion) – 75 percent of 2019 levels.

This comes after December 2024’s GGR came in at MOP18.2 billion ($2.27 billion) -according to the Macau gaming watchdog’s data – down by 2 percent year-on-year.

Hopes were for January’s gaming revenue to set the tone for the rest of the year.

Analysts are estimating yearly GGR growth for 2025 to rest anywhere between 4 percent and 9 percent – although depending on the January results, estimates could be recalibrated.

Daily Asia Gaming eBrief: Bangkok Port unlikely to host nation’s first casino

0
Good morning. All eyes are on Bangkok. And while Thai officials have indicated that the Bangkok Port is a potential location for a possible future IR, the logistics necessary to shape it into a viable and attractive long-term tourism destination mean that it’s unlikely to be the first location to open a casino in the country. Still, massive potential awaits, if it follows success stories such as Singapore’s Marina Bay. Meanwhile, in Macau, expectations are for GGR growth to continue this year, with Seaport predicting a 7 percent annual rise. Larger operators stand to benefit this year and going forward, as smaller players bleed market share.

Bangkok Port unlikely to house nation’s first casino

Strict urban planning, infrastructure and transportation arrangements, zoning and synergy with new legislation will all be essential in elevating the Bangkok Port as a potential destination for a new IR complex in the city. But given the logistics, expert Daniel Cheng opines that the zone is highly unlikely to host Thailand’s first casino. This shouldn’t discourage the issuance of an entertainment zone license for the area, however, as it is likely to be a top pick for operators wanting to enter the market.

Singapore’s Changi Airport barely misses 2019 passenger record but 2025 growth expected to slow

0

Singapore’s Changi Airport in 2024 narrowly missed equaling the record number of passenger traffic seen in 2019, welcoming some 67.7 million passengers, or 99.1 percent of the pre-COVID level.

But projections now are for low single-digit growth, according to analysts heard by The Straits Times.

The Merlion city has been steadily improving on the momentum gained by being an early jurisdiction to open up after the pandemic, steadily increasing the routes and airlines which it offers.

As of this month, there are 100 airlines operating over 7,400 flights per week, with Singapore linked to 163 cities spread across 49 countries and jurisdictions.

The current aim is to increase to over 200 city links by the mid-2030s.

But Singapore isn’t the only one trying to get its piece of the traveler pie.

According to the Center for Aviation, there are some 170 construction projects at airports in Asia-Pacific, with investment totaling $217 billion. A further 90 new airport projects are scheduled in the region, worth $121 billion.

One analyst cited by the publication is expecting a growth rate of 3 to 5 percent at Changi Airport this year, as low-cost carriers expand, investments boost air travel capacity and travel demand rises.

Another analyst lowers this estimate to 1 to 2 percent in annual growth, due to geopolitical tensions and a possible economic slowdown due to US trade policies.

Yet another analyst expects January’s Changi passenger traffic to reach 6 million in January, a 10 percent yearly increase, despite predicting low single-digit growth for the rest of 2025.

Changi is currently looking at SG$3 billion ($2.22 billion) in upgrades to its four current terminals over the next six years to ensure capacity can meet demand, banking on technology to improve efficiency. With a new terminal (Terminal 5), Changi is expected to boost its yearly passengers from 90 million to 140 million, however this will only be possible in the mid-2030s, following its completion and ramp-up.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong is boosting its capacity to up to 120 million passengers annually, drawing largely from the mainland China crowd. Meanwhile, Incheon Airport saw some 70.7 million passengers in 2024, surpassing 2019 levels. Incheon can now handle 106 million passengers annually.

Compared to other regional airports, however, Singapore does offer a tourism and retail segment which is unique. With its impressive waterfall, rainforest and shopping options, the Jewel Changi Airport saw record footfall of over 80 million people in 2024, its highest ever since its 2019 opening. This was a 10 percent yearly increase.

Overseas traveler footfall rose by 35 percent yearly, with the top five markets being China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Australia and the Philippines.

Mall retail sales per square foot during the year grew by 6 percent yearly, despite a soft retail climate.

The retail complex is a joint venture between Changi Airport Group and CapitaLand Development. The SG$1.7 billion ($1.26 billion) retail complex has more than 260 retail stores and F&B outlets.

Sands China receives ISO 14001 certification for Environmental Excellence

0

Macau gaming operator Sands China has announced the achievement of the ISO 14001:2015 certification for its Environmental Management System, as part of the company’s continuous efforts to improve best practices and meet international standards throughout its operations.

ISO certifications are awarded by the London-based British Standards Institution (BSI) Group, the world’s largest national standards and certification body. BSI audits and provides certification to companies worldwide that implement and comply with its management systems standards. The awarding of ISO 14001 certification ensures that an organization’s environmental management system (EMS) effectively and consistently identifies, manages, monitors, and holistically controls environmental issues.

As the most widely recognized and adopted EMS standard in the world, ISO 14001 benefits a company’s operations by:
  • Providing an effective framework for managing overall environmental performance and compliance;
  • Promoting predictability and consistency in managing environmental obligations;
  • Demonstrating environmental stewardship towards stakeholders and investors.
In addition to environmental management, Sands China holds ISO certifications for its effective management of:
  • Food safety (ISO22000:2018);
  • Facilities and Conventions and Exhibitions (ISO9001:2015);
  • Information Security (ISO27001:2013);
  • Event Sustainability (ISO20121:2012); and
  • Occupational Health and Safety (ISO45001:2018).

Sean McCreery, EVP of Operations at Sands China Ltd., said: “The achievement of ISO 14001 certification for our environmental management system is the result of the concerted efforts of team members throughout the entire company, in cooperation with suppliers and various stakeholders. The sustainable development of our business and the environment has always been a core value at Sands China and I would like to express my gratitude to everyone for working together to implement ongoing improvements to our environmental protection measures.”

“We are committed to integrating environmental protection into our daily operations and cultivating a green culture and we will continue to apply environmental management measures to various aspects of our business following the guidelines of the ISO14001 international standard. Through taking practical actions to save energy and improve efficiency, we can help build a green community by reducing our operational impact on the environment.”
