The new president of Macau's Civil Aviation Authority says that only 30 percent of pre-pandemic flight connections to the SAR have been restored so far, and that the industry is operating at 50 percent of its capacity, while no new route applications have been received.

Macau’s Civil Aviation Authority (AACM) has outlined upcoming changes to scheduled flights, signaling a positive shift for air travel in the region.

The number of commercial flights to Macau in June went up by some 525 percent yearly, topping 3,281, while those in the first half-year rose by 184.6 percent yearly, to 15,617, however official data show that foreign visitors to the SAR are still at just 30 percent of 2019 levels.

Macau hoisted the flag for typhoon signal number 8 at 5:30am on Monday, the first storm of such intensity so far this year. Due to the influence of Severe Tropical Storm Talim, authorities are closing the bridges that link the peninsula to Taipa (and subsequently Cotai), grounding all flights and halting ferries to Hong Kong. Authorities also closed the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge at 5:30am, with the last bus departing at 5:00.

The number of arriving and departing commercial flights in Macau saw a 353.6 percent yearly increase in April, totaling 2,980 – as the ramp up of international air routes continued, further boosting the city’s aim to attract more international visitors. Cross-border vehicle traffic also surged during the period.

Macau's Chief Executive said late on Tuesday that all six gaming operators in the city have established foreigner-only gaming zones, with a total of 12 designated areas. The official also welcomed proposals by gaming operators to bring in overseas customers on private jets given the delay in resuming commercial flight capacity. 

The ongoing labor shortage is one of the major headwinds for Macau’s international flight resumption, confirms Macau’s Chief Executive.

Macau’s flagship carrier, Air Macau, saw a continuous increase in international tourists to Macau, according to company data, with nearly 7,000 ticket sales weekly for overseas flights, as the uptick kept at 20 percent weekly.
