Thai police forced to pursue charges against illegal online gambling host suspects, despite claims of $4 million extortion

Police in Thailand are walking back their decision to drop charges against six suspected illegal online gambling hosts who had previously accused authorities of extorting some THB140 million ($4 million) from them in exchange for their freedom.

Foxbet168

The case relates to the operation of online gambling site Foxbet168, allegedly run by Thaninwat Udomchaowaset – a figure who was arrested in June.

Police in Chon Buri had previously decided to not press charges against the suspects, noting that several witnesses who had testified later changed their mind. But the deputy spokesperson of the Office of the Attorney-General noted over the weekend that other witnesses are still willing to testify, claiming that there is enough evidence and witnesses for the arraignment.

Prosecutors have ordered the police to bring the suspects in for arraignment on January 18th. The six were charged on December 19th of 2023 with illegally hosting gambling and money laundering.

The case could be complicated by authorities’ failure to abide by new guidelines regarding arrests, however, in particular mandates for video and audio recording during arrests.

The case is being closely watched, as a measurement of Thai authorities ability to crackdown on corruption. The attorney general’s involvement is aimed at ensuring justice in the case, and highlighting penalties for those who accept bribes.
