Macau saw a marked increase in tourist arrivals during the Easter holiday period from April 18th to 21st, with visitor arrivals exceeding half a million, despite the holiday not being observed in mainland China, Macau’s primary tourist source market.
According to data released by the Public Security Police Force, Macau welcomed 118,999 visitors on April 18th, the first day of the Easter holiday. The number increased substantially to 161,309 on April 19th, making it the peak day of the period. Visitor arrivals then moderated to 139,791 on April 20th, while April 21st recorded 80,708 visitors by 5pm, with final figures expected to rise further.
Across the weekend, many areas of Macau recorded heavy tourist traffic. In total, Macau received at least 500,807 visitors during the Easter holiday period.
Andy Wu, president of the Macau Tourism Industry Association, projected that since Easter is not a long holiday, the surge was mainly driven by visitors from Hong Kong, and international tourist numbers were not expected to increase significantly.
The industry is now turning its attention to the upcoming Labor Day holiday, which will run from May 1st to May 5th in mainland China. This five-day public holiday traditionally represents one of the busiest travel periods for mainland Chinese tourists and is expected to bring a substantial boost to Macau’s visitor numbers.
