Online fraudsters becoming increasingly sophisticated: Jumio

As the online gaming industry continues to expand, the importance of effective Know Your Customer (KYC) processes has never been more critical, offering strong opportunities for companies.

In an interview with AGB, Marvin Miao, Regional Sales Director for Jumio, highlighted the ongoing battle against fraudsters who are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their tactics.

“The challenge continues to persist,” Miao remarks. “It’s a constant battle between KYC providers like us and the fraudsters because they are getting more and more creative every day.”

Jumio, KYC

Jumio, an online mobile payment and identity verification company that offers card and ID scanning and validation products for mobile and web transactions has processed over 1 billion transactions globally, and Miao points out a worrying trend: “The fraud cases are actually on the rise, especially with big fake frauds. There are so many software tools available that can easily create deep fakes to trick the system.”

This rise in fraudulent activities prompts Jumio to invest heavily in technology, with Miao stating, “We have filed more than 300 patents, especially in the area of deep fake attacks.”

The growing threat of fraud

Miao reveals that some gaming platform operators are already facing these challenges. “I’ve heard from them that they also face deep fake attacks,” he explains.

Fraudsters can create multiple accounts using different IDs and faces to exploit bonuses, leading to significant marketing losses. “It’s becoming quite a big challenge because it’s like a waste of marketing money,” he adds.

The issue is particularly prevalent in Southeast Asia, with countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam experiencing higher instances of fraud.

“Fraudsters do not only do it once; they tend to do it multiple times. That’s why we think KYC is no longer just about checking IDs at the start. It’s actually an ongoing process.”

The executive advocates for re-authenticating users whenever they attempt significant transactions, ensuring that security measures are consistently applied, and notes that regulatory changes in the region are beginning to address these challenges.

“At least for the Philippines, the regulators are giving a much clearer view of how you should do it,” he says. In the past, many companies struggled due to a lack of guidelines, but recent developments have clarified the minimum requirements for KYC compliance.

“Singapore is very advanced,” he comments, highlighting the country’s proactive regulatory environment.

With the rise of crypto wallets, the need for effective KYC measures has grown even more urgent. Miao explains, “The key challenge for businesses is ensuring that users are who they say they are. You don’t want to provide a service to a robot or an AI.”

Balancing security and user experience

As gaming platforms tighten their KYC protocols, there is a delicate balance to maintain. Miao acknowledges, “In the business of gaming, it’s all about trust. The platforms must trust their users are real people, and users must trust that the platforms are legitimate.”

He emphasizes that when platforms ask for identification and verification, it fosters trust among users. “If I feel like this is a legit platform, I can confidently put my funds in it,” he states.

However, excessive security measures can deter potential users. Miao argues that “the platform itself needs to be trustworthy to attract players.” He believes that investing in advanced technology is essential for keeping pace with fraudulent tactics. “Honestly, we’re not going to eliminate 100 percent of fraudsters. They are always the first to use new technologies to trick the system,” he admits.

The challenges of online identification and KYC in the gaming industry are significant, yet they are not insurmountable. With continuous investment in technology and a commitment to understanding fraud patterns, companies like Jumio are striving to stay one step ahead of fraudsters.

As Miao puts it, “what we can do is really to understand the patterns of recent frauds and develop our technologies to tackle the latest trends”, with maintaining trust and security remaining essential for the future of online gaming.

Newly opened Capella at Galaxy Macau drives May GGR forecast increase to $2.64B

Investment bank Citigroup analysts have modestly raised their May 2025 gross gaming revenue forecast for Macau from MOP21 billion ($2.61 billion) to MOP21.25 billion ($2.64 billion), citing stronger-than-expected performance in the week of May 19th-25th that they attribute to the newly opened Capella at Galaxy Macau.

According to industry sources cited in Citigroup’s weekly gaming update, Macau’s gross gaming revenue for the first 25 days of May reached approximately MOP17.5 billion ($2.17 billion). This translates to a daily run rate of MOP686 million ($85.3 million) during the week of May 19th-25th, representing a 16 percent increase from the previous week’s MOP593 million ($73.7 million) per day.

The analysts noted that VIP volumes grew approximately 25 to 30 percent month-over-month, while mass gross gaming revenue declined 10 percent month-over-month during this period. VIP hold rates appeared lower compared to the previous week but remained above normal levels.

‘The spike in last week’s gross gaming revenue was a pleasant surprise. We suspect this was due to the newly opened Capella at Galaxy Macau,’ Citigroup analysts George Choi and Timothy Chau stated in their report.

The revised May forecast of MOP21.25 billion ($2.64 billion) represents 82 percent of May 2019 levels and reflects a 5 percent year-over-year increase. For the final six days of May, the analysts expect gross gaming revenue to average MOP625 million ($77.7 million) per day, representing a one percent increase versus the 2024 average.

Macau’s gaming sector showed particularly strong momentum at the beginning of May during mainland China’s Labor Day Golden Week holiday. The Special Administrative Region recorded gross gaming revenue of MOP5.1 billion ($634 million) during the first five days of May, averaging MOP1.02 billion ($127 million) per day. This performance represented robust year-over-year growth of 12 percent despite a higher 2024 comparison base, reaching more than 90 percent of pre-pandemic levels for the same period.

Tourism figures also exceeded expectations during the holiday period, with Macau recording 850,000 visitor arrivals during the five-day Labor Day holiday, averaging 170,000 daily visitors. This represented a 40.7 percent increase from the previous year, breaking post-pandemic records according to the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO).

Given that only one weekend day remains in May, the analysts expect the daily gross gaming revenue for the remaining days of the month to be moderate.

From January to April, total lottery ticket sales nationwide reached RMB206.34 billion ($29.19 billion), indicating a year-on-year increase of 0.7 percent.

Under China’s lottery management regulations, funds generated from ticket sales are allocated to administrative costs, public welfare projects, and prize payouts.

In 2024, China’s lottery sales reached RMB623.5 billion ($85.8 billion), setting a new record since the lottery system was introduced in 1984.

Sports lottery sales accounted for a dominant 66 percent of the total, reaching RMB415.53 billion ($57.68 billion), up 7.9 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, welfare lottery sales stood at RMB207.96 billion ($28.87 billion), reflecting a 7 percent annual increase.

Macau tourism office rolls out youth-focused campaign in South Korea

The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) will launch a four-day promotional roadshow in Seoul from May 30th to June 2nd, aiming to reinforce Macau’s position as a preferred destination for Korean tourists—particularly millennials and Generation Z planning summer holidays and trips later in 2025.

In a press release, the MGTO stated that South Korea remains Macau’s largest international visitor source market, with robust growth indicators suggesting continued expansion.

According to its 2024 Travel Behavior Survey, 87.8 percent of Korean respondents expressed intentions to visit Macau in 2024–2025, highlighting the market’s strong potential.

As of May 16th, Macau had recorded nearly 235,000 Korean arrivals—representing a 26 percent year-on-year increase. Current figures represent 65 percent of pre-pandemic 2019 levels, with Korean visitors averaging 2.2-night stays in April.

Air connectivity continues to improve, with approximately 35 weekly flights currently operating between Macau and South Korea. This expanded network is expected to support bilateral tourism growth and facilitate broader business development in the sector.

The Seoul roadshow forms part of MGTO’s strategy to sustain momentum in its most significant international market, while adopting experiential marketing approaches to better engage younger travelers.

Themed “My Favorite Macau,” the roadshow will be held at Epic Seoul, located within The Hyundai Seoul shopping complex—Seoul’s largest mall and a popular venue among younger demographics. The location also holds cultural significance as a frequent filming site for Korean dramas and celebrity exhibitions.

In the long term, Macau authorities aim to attract 3 million international visitors annually. In 2024, the city has already welcomed over 2.4 million international arrivals. Even though this represents a 66 percent year-on-year increase, it still accounts for only about 7 percent of the approximately 35 million total visitors Macau received last year.

BetGames boosts slots portfolio with Bad Baboons Deluxe and Gold Adventure

Leading games provider BetGames has powered its RNG content portfolio with the launch of the anticipated sequel, Bad Baboons Deluxe, and a brand-new Wild West quest, Gold Adventure.

Following the success of the original release, Bad Baboons Deluxe reintroduces the familiar mischievous monkeys and jungle setting, but on an enhanced 6×3 grid, offering more ways to win.

Landing five gold monkey coins activates the Hold & Win feature with three respins, where symbols can carry cash values up to 10x or the Mini, Major, or Mega Jackpot worth 20x, 50x, or 200x, respectively. Filling the entire grid with coins awards the maximum 10,000x Ultra Jackpot.

The Free Spins feature can be triggered by landing three to five scatters, awarding between 10 and 15 spins. During this bonus, all banana wilds that contribute to a winning combination expand to fill the entire reel, boosting payouts.

Similarly to Bad Baboons Deluxe, the action in Gold Adventure centres around the Free Spins and Hold & Win bonuses, with the action taking place in an American Frontier town. Five or more sheriff badges trigger the Hold & Win feature, with each that lands carrying cash prizes up to 200x, while filling the entire grid awards a 5,000x maximum win.

Since making its debut in the slots vertical in January 2025, BetGames has developed and released numerous engaging titles that diversify its offering and make it a standout supplier in the iGaming space.

In addition to the new slots, BetGames has also unveiled Instant Roulette, a refreshing RNG roulette title with fast-paced betting rounds and seamless visuals, designed to deliver an immersive experience across devices.

Ian Catchick, Chief Product and Business Development Officer at BetGames, said: “BetGames’ product roadmap is tailored to accommodate customer feedback, ensuring we develop games aligned with their unique audience preferences. After receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback about the original Bad Baboons title, it was clear there was demand for a sequel, which refines the experience while retaining the charming essence of the first iteration.”

“We’re also incredibly excited about Gold Adventure, which leverages the proven popular Old Western theme. A collection of gritty outlaws line the reels set against the dusty settlement backdrop, making for a truly captivating journey back in time.”

Macau upgrades anti-scam center as AI-powered fraud emerges

0

Macau’s Judiciary Police (PJ) officially launched an upgraded Anti-Fraud Center on Tuesday, May 27th, as part of efforts to combat increasingly sophisticated scam tactics, including the city’s first known case involving artificial intelligence (AI).

The newly enhanced center includes a dedicated office area and an “AI Deepfake Interactive Experience Zone,” aimed at boosting public awareness of evolving scam methods.

PJ Deputy Director Sou Sio Keong noted at the opening ceremony that scammers have recently impersonated customer service agents from platforms such as Alipay, leading to multiple victims being defrauded within a short period.

Authorities said the upgraded center will serve as a platform to modernize public education campaigns, strengthen collaboration with financial institutions, and deepen cross-border fraud prevention efforts.

According to official figures, Macau recorded 1,260 telecommunications network fraud cases in 2024, representing a 1.4 percent decrease from the previous year. The total amount of money involved in these cases dropped sharply by twenty-five percent to MOP232 million ($28.8 million). In the first quarter of 2025, the number of cases fell by 12.1 percent, with a corresponding 28.4 percent decline in financial losses.

In general, despite Macau being a gaming hub, gaming-related scams are rare. However, more stock, crypto, investment scam or love-trap like scams happen frequently.

Sou emphasized that while the figures indicate progress, the emergence of AI-driven fraud presents new challenges. In response, the PJ plans to roll out a major update to its anti-fraud mobile app in the third quarter and launch a “Public Anti-Fraud Awareness Week” campaign to reinforce prevention efforts.
