Macau attracted 2.94M visitors in December 2023, up 656%

Almost three million visitors entered Macau in December of last year, with strong growth being registered in all categories, according to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

The total number of visitor arrivals recorded at the border stood at 2,943,930, an increase of 656 percent year-on-year and 13.9 percent month-on-month. Same day visitors (1,485,901) and overnight visitors (1,458,029) also showed strong year-on-year growth, rising 829 percent and 535.5 percent respectively.

A reduction was recorded in the average length of stay, which stood at 1.2 days (down 0.9 days yearly) and the duration of overnight stays, which stood at 2.2 days (down 1.4 days y-o-y). Only the same day visitor duration remained steady at 0.2.

Most visitors came from mainland China (1,962,223, +483 percent) with Hong Kong (686,441) and international arrivals (238,611) also showing strong year-on-year growth, at 1,501.6 percent and 7,223.8 percent, respectively.

The region saw strong growth for the whole of 2023, with visitor arrivals up 394.9 percent compared to the previous year, to 28.21 million. Overnight visitors (14,227,229) and same-day visitors (13,985,774) were also up significantly at 472.7 percent and 334.8 percent year-on-year.

Mainland visitors were again the biggest group, with 19,049,147 or 67.5 percent of all visitors in 2023. This number represented an increase of 273.1 percent compared to 2022. The number of tourists arriving by land increased by 322.9 percent yearly and stood at 22,383,614. Visitors arriving by sea and by air were also on the up by 2,127.7 percent and 783.3 percent, or 3,699,014 and 2,130,375, year-on-year respectively.
