City of Dreams Mediterranean makes 130 employees redundant as business falls due to Israel conflict

Just months after opening, Melco’s City of Dreams Mediterranean property is already cutting staff, citing the ‘unforeseen and ongoing conflict in Israel’.

The group notes that the conflict has brought about ‘significant challenges that are greatly impacting our business operations’, including a ‘steep’ drop in hotel occupancy and ‘substantial reductions in international casino visitation’.

The conditions have resulted in the company letting go of 130 employees and not extending probation for a further 51 employees.

The group notes that it is ‘committed to providing them with support during this transitional period’.

The redundancies were made based upon a ‘Last-In, First Out’ approach, as well as ‘in compliance with the Cyprus law for redundancies’, it notes.

The group also says it will provide ‘ex-gratia packages which are beyond the legal minimum and above industry practices’.

Just last August, the property’s General Manager Grant Johnson told AGB that the group was focusing on clientele “including those from the Middle East, North Africa and Europe”.

City of Dreams Mediterranean, located in Cyprus, houses some 100 tables and 1,000 slot machines.

The group had initially noted that there was a “challenge finding sufficient local employees”. Before the redundancies the group employed over 2,000 people, “the majority being locals”.
