The Star Entertainment Group Limited has announced the appointment of Janelle Campbell as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Star Sydney pending all necessary regulatory approvals.
With a career spanning over two decades in the casino industry, and held senior executive roles with leading hotel companies in Australia, such as Financial Controller at Conrad Treasury in Brisbane from 1994 to 2003, and Executive Director of Finance for Conrad Jupiters and Treasury Casinos Queensland from 2003 to 2004
She was also Senior Vice President of Finance for Melco Resorts & Entertainment in Macau from 2008 to 2018.
‘I am excited to be joining The Star at a pivotal moment in the company’s history and to help shape the future for a venue that has been an iconic Sydney destination for almost 30 years,’ Campbell is cited as saying in the company’s appointment dispatch.
The group has had a rough couple of years, having been found “unfit” to hold a license and operate a casino in Sydney in 2022 following an independent review conducted by the Casino Commission of New South Wales.
The decision led the group to provide a Remediation Plan Structure to address the issues raised by the commission.
Campbell stated she was ‘clear on the strategic priorities’, including the ‘urgent focus on ensuring our remediation actions drive a return to suitability and the removal of the existing licence suspension’.
Her appointment marks the completion of the recruitment of CEOs for The Star’s tourism and entertainment destinations in Sydney, Gold Coast, and Brisbane. Alongside Jessica Mellor, CEO of Gold Coast, and Daniel Finch, CEO of Brisbane, Campbell will report to the Group CEO and Managing Director, Robbie Cooke.
Robbie Cooke expressed his enthusiasm about Campbell joining the team, highlighting her extensive experience, strong leadership skills, and her track record in overseeing large-scale operations and her ability to develop and implement strategic business plans.
Campbell also emphasized her commitment to strategic priorities, including addressing remediation actions to achieve suitability and regaining the trust and confidence of regulators, guests, team members, stakeholders, and the broader community.
