UIs, personalization and unified regulations key for iGaming’s success: ATMOSFERA CEO

Unified regulations, easy to use interfaces and personalized gaming experiences are all elements that will be driving the success of the iGaming industry going forward, according to the CEO of live casino games provider ATMOSFERA, Yury Ermantraut.

Speaking to AGB, the executive highlighted in particular younger punters’ need for speed and simplicity, noting that “the new generation really values their time and convenience, especially in the digital world”.

This means that regarding UIs, getting it right and having it personalized can be much more important than an early release date.

Ermantraut gives the example of a new Blackjack product, which the group was thinking to launch “without some standard features and practices to speed up time to market”. But after analysis, the group ended up pushing back the release date by some three months. “It was totally worth it because we ended up attracting a younger audience specifically for that product”.

While the younger demographic is definitely important for anyone in either online or land-based operations, ATMOSFERA indicates that they’re not the main focus.

“The big players can splash out on targeting the younger generation to turn them into regulars but right now, we’ve got other fish to fry,” says Ermantraut.

The group is also taking a selective focus in its competitive strategy, pushing “taste and style” and “trust in our gaming experience”, noting that there’s “a steady audience who appreciates it”.

However, the executive is still keenly keeping his ear to the ground.

“Everyone’s preferences can change over time […] The market keeps growing year after year. But of course, people might stop playing due to shifting habits, just like in any other industry,” he notes of the overall gaming environment.

Asian market, training and AI

Speaking of markets, the group has its sights firmly set on Asia, rolling out two new products this quarter aimed at the Asian diaspora.

Atmosfera, Live Games, Igaming

“The Asian market is huge! In terms of revenue, it competes head-to-head with Europe”, notes the executive.

The group currently operates seven live products, with 24-hour live streaming of the games. It also launched an academy to train its own game presenters, part of the group’s push to stay ahead of the curve with all of its employees.

“We annually cover the costs of training courses for our employees and provide opportunities for them to participate in specialized forums. We make sure our team gets training courses every year and let them join relevant forums”.

This approach also allows the iGaming operator to stay up to date with key new components, such as AI.

But, while AI can offer “personalized gaming experiences, enhance player protection through early intervention, improve fraud detection, and enable predictive analytics for optimized marketing and revenue generation,” the executive cautions that “limitations such as data quality, regulatory constraints, algorithm bias, and the need for human interpretation exist and must be addressed”.

What can improve online gaming?

Addressing the issue of AI highlights another wider industry problem.

“The one thing that would be great to do is to implement unified regulations for all jurisdictions.”

Yury Ermantraut

The specifics of each market, their rules (or sometimes lack thereof) can be a veritable minefield for operators, however there are organizations such as the International Gaming Standards Association (IGSA) which are working with partners and other similar bodies to get operators and regulators on the same page, while constantly battling the tide of new technology.

ATMOSFERA’s CEO says it aims to go hand-in-hand with such standardization, focusing particularly on “enhanced player protection, transparency and trust, innovation, and technology”.

In multiple panel discussions throughout Asia, operators and regulators alike have highlighted how the online sector in fact tends to be self-regulating, given the intense competition and need to maintain and expand their player base, due to confidence in their product.

Promising outlook for Macau gaming and SJM amid China concerns: CBRE

0

Despite concerns of China’s macroeconomic outlook, CBRE Research has expressed optimism about the prospects for Macau’s gaming market and SJM Holdings in particular.

After hosting SJM’s Chief Financial Officer Christopher Ip Shih Ming in London for a non-deal roadshow last week, CBRE highlighted three key takeaways from their discussions with investors.

The brokerage noted that investors were primarily worried about the regulatory environment and China’s influence on Macau but cited China’s continued expansion of the Individual Visit Scheme, which allows more mainland Chinese to travel to Macau and Hong Kong, as evidence of Beijing’s commitment to supporting the gaming hub’s development.

At the same time, while their economic outlook on China remains cautious, CBRE said Macau’s gross gaming revenue recovery through May indicates less correlation to the broader Chinese economy.

‘Although we wouldn’t suggest Macau is immune to slowing economic growth in China, it has proven more resilient. We see two driving forces here. The first is pent-up leisure demand in China after a three-year lockdown. We saw similar trends in other markets upon reopening with demand for experiential travel outweighing demand for consumer goods’, the brokerage added.

According to SJM’s 1Q24 financial results, the company recorded a 74.5 percent year-on-year increase in net gaming revenue in the quarter, reaching HK$6.46 billion ($827 million).

During the same period, the group’s adjusted EBITDA increased from HK$31 million ($4 million) in 1Q23 to HK$864 million ($110.5 million) in 1Q24.

CBRE analysts John DeCree and Max Marsh added that under new leadership from Managing Director Daisy Ho and a ‘more proactive CFO’ (Ip Shih Ming), the longest-running Macau concessionaire is working to reposition its Grand Lisboa Palace resort and identify operational efficiencies, with ‘early signs of progress’.

At the end of 2023, SJM Holdings appointed Ip Shih Ming as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO), hailing its experience in ‘investments, real estate transactions and corporate finance’.

Overall, the CBRE team said they were “encouraged by the level of investor interest” in both Macau and SJM, despite prevailing macroeconomic concerns.

Macau GGR weakens due to seasonality and Euro 2024

0

Macau’s gaming performance in June has been affected by softer seasonality and likely the football tournament in Europe, according to UBS in its latest market check memo.

Macau’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) averaged MOP514 million ($63.92 million) per day in the last week (June 17th to 23rd), which is nearly 65 percent of the 2Q19 level. Meanwhile, the mass market performance remains strong at 90-95 percent of 2Q19 levels.

These figures represent a further decline from the previous week’s MOP533 million ($66.3 million) per day. In addition to seasonality and Euro 2024 factors, UBS also mentions a lower VIP hold rate.

In its investment memo, UBS notes that month-to-date GGR has fallen to MOP578 million ($71.9 million) per day, down about 11 percent month-on-month, slightly below the June seasonality average of a 9 percent decrease observed from 2015 to 2019.

Breaking down the segments, mass GGR was down 10-12 percent month-on-month, while VIP volume decreased by about 10 percent month-on-month, with a VIP hold rate of 2.6-2.8 percent.

Despite the weakened gaming market in June, hotel booking data show positive momentum for the upcoming summer season. According to data from 33 hotels tracked by UBS, one-month-forward hotel prices have risen for the summer holiday period, reaching HK$3,400 ($435) per night, marking a 4 percent increase week-on-week and a 15 percent increase year-on-year.

Analysts anticipate that visitor growth will be supported by the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) expansion to eight additional cities and increased flight capacity during the summer.

In another investment memo, analysts from Citigroup revise down the June GGR projection from MOP18 billion ($2.24 billion) to MOP17.25 billion ($2.15 billion), effectively implying a MOP564 million ($70.2 million) per day run-rate for the remainder of the month.

Macau’s May GGR hit the highest level since the city’s borders reopened in January 2023. The city’s GGR grew by 29.7 percent year-on-year to MOP20.19 billion ($2.51 billion) in May. These results benefited from the Labor Day holiday period, a five-day public holiday in mainland China. Macau received approximately 605,000 tourists during the holiday.

For the first five months of 2024 combined, GGR amounted to MOP96.06 billion ($11.9 billion), up 47.9 percent year-on-year.

Jeju Dream Tower management could face charges for fire safety regulations

0

Five officials from Jeju Dream Tower resort may face charges for violating fire safety regulations following an incident earlier this month.

According to Allin Media, the Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters confirmed suspicions that Jeju Dream Tower resort deliberately disabled the automatic fire alarm system, resulting in a 17-minute delay before notifying the fire department.

Authorities have transferred five resort officials responsible for the violations to the prosecutor’s office. If convicted, they could face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to KRW50 million ($36,000).

The incident occurred on June 9th, when a fire started due to overheating of a sauna heater. The casino was closed for nearly two hours, and several employees required hospital treatment due to smoke exposure.

Jeju Dream Tower, which opened in December 2020, reported cumulative casino sales of nearly KRW117.51 billion ($85.4 million) for the first five months of 2024, marking a 211.4 percent year-on-year increase, according to its latest business update.
