Philippines gambling figure Atong Ang reportedly sighted in Vietnam

Fugitive Philippine gaming figure Charlie ‘Atong’ Ang has reportedly been sighted in Vietnam, according to Philippine authorities, adding a cross-border dimension to one of the country’s most high-profile cases linked to the gambling sector.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said authorities had received intelligence indicating that Ang may be hiding in Vietnam, with efforts underway to verify the information with local counterparts. “It is an intelligence report and we are following it up for confirmation with the Vietnam authorities,” Remulla said.

The development comes as Ang remains a fugitive in the Philippines, facing multiple charges, including kidnapping with homicide and serious illegal detention in connection with the disappearance of dozens of cockfighting enthusiasts (“sabungeros”). Authorities believe Ang may have left the Philippines via an undocumented “backdoor” route through Mindanao, potentially transiting through Malaysia before reaching Vietnam, with no official record of departure from the Bureau of Immigration.

Ang is a prominent figure in the Philippine gambling ecosystem, with long-standing involvement in both legal and illegal betting markets, including online cockfighting operations (“e-sabong”). His case has drawn significant attention due to its intersection with the regulated gaming sector, particularly as the Philippines continues to grapple with the fallout from the now-suspended e-sabong industry and broader enforcement challenges tied to gambling-linked criminal activity.

While Remulla noted it is unlikely Ang has active gambling operations in Vietnam due to the country’s stricter regulatory environment, the reported sighting nonetheless raises questions about cross-border enforcement and regional cooperation in pursuing gaming-linked criminal cases. The Philippines is understood to be exploring coordination channels with Vietnamese authorities, with existing extradition frameworks potentially coming into play should Ang’s presence in the country be confirmed.
