Thailand studies “Disneyland Thailand” mega-project in EEC without casino

0

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has said a proposed “Disneyland Thailand” project in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is feasible and is already under study as a large-scale public–private partnership (PPP), according to local media outlet The Nation.

The project is being positioned as a flagship tourism and entertainment development aimed at supporting the country’s post-COVID tourism recovery, without the inclusion of a casino.

Phiphat, also the Transport Minister and overseer of the EEC was responding to questions about whether a Disneyland-style development could realistically be delivered in Thailand. He said preliminary assessments indicate the project could move forward under a PPP model that combines state oversight with private-sector expertise, technology, and capital.

According to the official, the proposal would extend well beyond a conventional theme park. Plans under consideration include a concert hall and a world-class stadium with a seating capacity of at least 80,000, designed to host international sports competitions, global concerts, and other large-scale events. He emphasized that the concept does not require a casino component.

The choice of the EEC reflects its existing infrastructure readiness, Phiphat said. The area is supported by international airports, rail networks and planned high-speed rail links, deep-sea ports, and proximity to major tourism destinations such as Bangkok, Pattaya, and Rayong. These factors, he noted, make the corridor suitable for a complex, multi-venue development intended to attract both domestic and international visitors.

The EEC has previously been mentioned as a potential location for entertainment complexes featuring casino developments. Under a former Thai government led by Paetongtarn Shinawatra, discussions around possible casino resort locations included five sites nationwide: two in Bangkok, and one each in the EEC, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. Those discussions were linked to efforts by the previous administration to push forward gambling legislation, which ultimately failed to pass.

Macau January GGR momentum outpaces pre-pandemic seasonality: UBS

0

Macau’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) continued to show solid momentum in late January, with month-to-date performance as of January 26th tracking ahead of historical pre-pandemic seasonal patterns, according to a recent report by UBS.

Based on channel checks cited by the brokerage, Macau’s GGR averaged approximately MOP712 million ($88.8 million) per day on a month-to-date basis, representing an increase of about 21 percent year-on-year and around 6 percent month-on-month. UBS noted that this compares favorably with the typical 2015–2019 seasonal trend, which historically showed a month-on-month increase of around 2 percent during the same period.

The outperformance was supported by broad-based growth across gaming segments. In its note, UBS said mass-market GGR was estimated to have increased by around 6 percent to 8 percent month-on-month, while VIP volumes were also up approximately 6 percent to 8 percent compared with December levels.

The sustained daily run-rate indicates that January demand has remained resilient outside peak holiday periods. This also shows a recovery from December, when year-end festive season activity fell short of forecasts.

Lukewarm Macau visitation dampens Chinese New Year GGR performance: CLSA

Ahead of the Chinese New Year, UBS said 27 of the 32 hotels it tracks were sold out during the holiday period, broadly unchanged year-on-year, suggesting visitation levels have been sustained into February.

Separately, Citigroup said Macau’s gaming revenue outlook for the combined January–February period remains unchanged.

‘Our Jan–Feb combined GGR forecast remains unchanged at MOP42.0 billion ($5.24 billion), implying a 10.5 percent year-on-year growth,’ Citigroup analysts said in a note.

Chinese New Year can fall in either January or February depending on the lunar calendar, which can significantly shift gaming volumes between the two months. As a result, analysts often assess the combined January–February period to better capture underlying demand trends without seasonal distortion. This year, the Chinese New Year falls on February 17th, with February 15th to 23rd widely viewed as the Chinese New Year Golden Week.

China cancels 49 flight routes to Japan

All scheduled flights on 49 air routes between China and Japan have been cancelled for February following political tensions between the two countries, the Straits Times reported.

Citing travel platform information, the newspaper states that in January, the cancellation rate for flights from mainland China to Japan reached 47.2 percent, an increase of 7.8 percentage points from the previous month.

On January 26th, it was announced that all scheduled flights on 49 routes between the two countries would be cancelled for February. This decision reflects ongoing concerns and disruptions in travel related to the region.

Major Chinese airlines—Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines—have responded by implementing special ticket change and refund policies to accommodate affected passengers.

Those with tickets purchased or reissued before January 26th are allowed one free flight change (subject to fare differences) or may apply for refunds on unused flight segments. These measures cover flights scheduled from March 29th to October 24th, affecting popular destinations such as Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Okinawa.

This latest development follows a mid-November travel advisory issued by China, which discouraged travel to Japan due to remarks made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi concerning Taiwan.

China on Monday warned its citizens against traveling to Japan during the Lunar New Year, with the Chinese foreign ministry said nationals “face serious security threats in Japan,” citing “a surge in crimes targeting Chinese citizens” and earthquakes.

Booking estimates and flight data show South Korea is on track to overtake Japan as the top destination for Chinese travelers during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cambodia foreign ministry defends Chen Zhi deportation as sovereign decision

0

Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has defended the deportation of Chen Zhi to China, noting that the move was a sovereign decision taken after authorities determined he had obtained Cambodian nationality through improper means, according to local Chinese-language media outlet Cambodia China Times.

In remarks dated January 26th, cited by the outlet, the ministry said the revocation of Chen’s citizenship and his subsequent deportation were carried out in accordance with Cambodian law, rejecting claims that the action was politically motivated. Officials stressed that the case involved the misuse of legal procedures to obtain nationality, making the decision a matter of national sovereignty rather than external pressure.

Chen Zhi Passport, Cambodia foreign ministry defends Chen Zhi deportation as sovereign decision

The clarification comes nearly three weeks after Chen was repatriated to China, amid heightened scrutiny of Cambodia’s handling of high-profile foreign investors and its cooperation with international law enforcement on transnational crime. Cambodian authorities confirmed that Chen, chairman of Prince Group, was arrested on January 6th along with two other individuals following what the Ministry of Interior described as ‘several months of joint investigative cooperation’ with China.

The Ministry of Interior said Chen’s Cambodian citizenship had been revoked prior to his extradition, which took place “within the scope of cooperation in combating transnational crime.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that citizenship obtained through fraudulent or improper means can be revoked under Cambodian law, particularly when national security or public order is at issue. However, the statement did not specify what constituted the alleged fraudulent or improper means in Chen’s case.

Chen has been targeted by coordinated enforcement actions by Western governments. On October 14th, both the US Treasury Department and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office announced sanctions against Chen and related entities, accusing Prince Group of involvement in online fraud and human trafficking. The US Department of Justice unsealed an indictment the same day, alleging that Chen oversaw forced-labor scam operations in Cambodia.

China’s state-owned news agency Xinhua reported on January 8th that Chen and his alleged criminal network are suspected of crimes including fraud and the concealment of illicit proceeds, adding that Chinese authorities are preparing arrest warrants for other alleged members of the organization.

At the time, Prince Group rejected the accusations by US and UK authorities, describing them as ‘baseless’ and politically motivated.

Macau 2H26 VIP revenue to slow as more affluent Chinese regions already tapped: CreditSights

0

Analysts at CreditSights are expecting the strong results from the VIP segment in Macau to continue into early 2026, with easy yearly comparisons to ‘support healthy growth to start the year’.

However, looking to 2H26, the analysts note ‘a more difficult path for GGR per visitor to grow’, particularly given that arrivals ‘from the more affluent regions of China have already mostly recovered back or surpassed pre-COVID levels’. This causes the analysts to opine that ‘further visitation recovery is likely to come largely from the less affluent regions with less spending power’. This could then offset upsides from higher-spending VIPs.

Even so, the CreditSights analysts – under FitchSolutions – note that the Macau government’s current FY26 GGR estimate of MOP236 billion ($29.45 billion) is ‘overly conservative’, in particular given that it would be a 4.6 percent decline from the MOP247.4 billion ($30.88 billion) – a 9.1 percent yearly increase.

Analysts Nicholas Chen and David Bussey predict ‘the potential for moderate (low-to-single digit) GGR growth in FY26’.

Overall, for 2025 GGR per visitor was down by 5 percent, to MOP6,174 ($770.5), despite Macau recording its highest-ever tourism influx – nearly 40.07 million tourists, a yearly increase of 13.7 percent. VIP GGR growth was 24 percent yearly, with the segment making up 27 percent of total FY25 GGR, note the analysts. Mass GGR also increased during the year, but only by 4 percent yearly.

The VIP growth was particularly accelerated in the final quarter of the year, rising by 45 percent to MOP20.3 billion ($2.53 billion). The analysts note that ‘the strong growth in (the) VIP segment was likely supported by a positive wealth effect from the equity market rallies seen in China and Hong Kong’, noting a 30 percent increase in the Hang Seng Index and a 27 percent rise in the China Securities Index.

Wynn Al Marjan Island to launch residential community to house 7,000+ employees

0

Wynn Resorts has unveiled its ‘purpose-built residential community’ adjacent to the upcoming UAE property Wynn Al Marjan Island, where it plans to accommodate some 80 percent of its team members.

The 26-acre Wynn Oasis is planned to house more than 7,000 employees through ’15 vertical residential communities’.

The residence is scheduled to open this summer, ahead of the 2027 opening of the integrated resort.

Located 15 minutes from Wynn Al Marjan Island, the residence also features a ‘multi-amenity’ hub dubbed The Pearl, featuring fitness, entertainment, social and wellness facilities – including two pools, a multi-purpose indoor sports arena, a cinema, karaoke studio and e-sports gaming lounge. It also includes retail outlets for groceries, ‘grooming’ and banking, alongside a medical clinic, pharmacy and tailor.

Four take-away F&B offerings will open alongside two sit-down venues – one buffet and a 24-hour live sports lounge.

The community also will feature an outdoor venue for community celebrations, live performances and cultural gatherings, with an open-air cinema and a nature retreat.

Aside from the amenities, Wynn Oasis will also feature ‘a fully operational on-site learning campus’- Wynn University, ‘designed to support long-term career development’. The facility includes culinary training kitchens, F&B ‘laboratories’, digital learning spaces and specialized training laboratories.

Speaking of the new residence, Wynn Al Marjan Island President Max Tappeiner noted, “When our colleagues feel supported, they are empowered to deliver at the highest level. With the launch of Wynn Oasis, we will set a new global standard for how hospitality organizations invest in their people.”
