Malaysia’s communications regulator will intensify monitoring and take enforcement action against online gambling content and betting websites during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said, according to local media outlet The Edge Malaysia.
Fahmi said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) would act against parties promoting or conducting online gambling activities in connection with the tournament. He also urged members of the public to report any links or content related to online gambling for further action.
“The MCMC will take action, and members of the public who come across any links or content related to online gambling are encouraged to submit their reports for further action,” Fahmi told a press conference on Monday, after a Roundtable Conference on Safe and Responsible Media Reporting of Suicidal Behavior.
The session was also attended by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
Fahmi said enforcement efforts would not be limited to mobile applications, but would also cover gambling websites seeking to exploit the tournament during the full competition period.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place from June 11th to July 19th, featuring matches across multiple host cities in North America, including Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The tournament will bring together national teams from around the world to compete for the championship over a month-long schedule.
