Messaging app Telegram has pledged closer cooperation with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to better combat scams and illegal online gambling.
The development comes as the result of a meeting between Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov and Malaysia’s Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil in Dubai. Telegram is used by around 15 million people in Malaysia and the meeting highlighted the growing concerns surrounding scams and illegal gambling activities on the platform.
The Communications and Multimedia Commission sees the commitment from the company as a significant step forward when it comes to combating cyber threats and the collaboration is aiming to make regulatory measures designed to protect users more efficient. It may also lead to new mechanisms and procedures designed to identify and address online risks.
Telegram is a cloud-based messaging app founded by Russian entrepreneur Pavel Durov and his brother Nikolai in 2013. Initially developed as a secure communication platform, it quickly gained popularity for its emphasis on privacy and encryption. Over the years, it has evolved into a versatile platform offering features such as group chats, channels, and file sharing. However, Telegram’s anonymity and encrypted messaging capabilities have also made it attractive to individuals seeking to engage in illicit activities, including gambling and scams.
