Macau draws 11K spectators for inaugural event at new Cotai public outdoor performance venue

The inaugural concert at Macau’s new outdoor event space in Cotai drew nearly 11,000 spectators on Saturday, officializing the draw of the new public venue nestled amongst multi-billion-dollar integrated resorts.

The venue itself is designed to handle over 50,000 spectators, according to the government, being designed for ‘shows or other large-scale events’.

Saturday’s concert brought together some 30 signers from mainland China, South Korea, Hong Kong and Macau.

Authorities say that the inaugural event ‘served to test the installations and equipment of the space, arrangements for crowd circulation, transit capacities and other aspects, which will continue to improve during the trial period’.

The new outdoor venue is located nearby SJM’s Grand Lisboa Palace and non-gaming venue The Lisboeta, tucked back away from the main Cotai Strip.

While the new venue has been lauded by some as likely to bring more foot traffic to the area, likely to benefit the surrounding IRs, there has been some confusion over the government’s direction with the venue, or the necessity for such a large public outdoor space.

Galaxy’s new Arena currently boasts a capacity of 12,000 spectators, while the Venetian Arena – which recently hosted an NBA showcase, has a capacity of some 15,000.

The layout for spectators at the new outdoor venue was also selective, with chairs placed in the part nearest the stage, followed by standing room.

Given the venue’s capacity, large segments of the grandstands were also vacant.
