Occupancy at Macau Hotel Association member properties fell by 4.6 percentage points year-on-year to 88.5 percent in June, while average room rates also declined, according to the association’s latest monthly report.
The average room rate dropped by 2.7 percent to MOP1,286.7 ($161), compared with MOP1,322.2 ($165) in June 2025.
All three hotel categories covered by the association recorded lower occupancy and room rates during the month.
Five-star hotels reported an occupancy rate of 89.6 percent, down 4.6 percentage points. Their average room rate declined by 1.8 percent to MOP1,443.6 ($180).
Three-star hotels recorded the highest occupancy rate, at 92.4 percent, despite posting the largest decline of 5.2 percentage points. Their average room rate fell by 4.9 percent to MOP855.2 ($107).
Four-star hotel occupancy declined by 4.2 percentage points to 82.9 percent, while room rates fell by a category-high 5.1 percent to MOP1,011.1 ($126).
The softer hotel performance came alongside a slowdown in Macau’s gaming market. Gross gaming revenue fell by 12.1 percent year-on-year and 18.1 percent month-on-month to MOP18.52 billion ($2.29 billion) in June. Citigroup said the FIFA World Cup likely diverted some player betting budgets away from casinos, weighing on gaming demand during the month.
For the first half of 2026, average occupancy across association members stood at 92.7 percent, down 0.9 percentage points. The average room rate decreased by 0.6 percent to MOP1,355.3 ($169).
