In the first four months of the year, Macau’s tourism sector witnessed a steady influx of visitors, with South Koreans and Thais emerging as the leading foreign tour groups.
According to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), Macau welcomed 31,000 South Koreans and 7,000 Thais from January to April, with both countries leading in foreign tour group arrivals, showing growth rates of 7,896.4 percent and 449.2 percent year-on-year respectively.
Overall, the city witnessed a significant surge in package tour arrivals, totaling 720,000 visitors1 in the first four months of the year, marking a solid increase of 257.9 percent compared to the same period last year.
Mainland Chinese tourists constituted the majority, with arrivals soaring by 226.3 percent to reach 643,000. International visitor arrivals on package tours experienced a spike of 2,292.5 percent, totaling 70,000.
In April, tour group visitor arrivals (Inbound Package Tour Only) leaped by 142.3 percent year-on-year to 216,000, with tour visitors from mainland China growing by 123.3 percent year-on-year to 194,000.
International visitor arrivals on package tours surged by 979.8 percent in April, totaling 20,000, with those coming from South Korea totaling 8,000 and Malaysia contributing 2,000.
Hotel occupancy rate reaches 83.3 percent in April
Hotels also benefited from the influx, with average hotel occupancy going up by 4 percentage points year-on-year to 83.3 percent in April. The rates for 5-star (85.1 percent) and 4-star hotels (79.6 percent) rose by 7.1 percentage points and 1 percentage point respectively, whereas the rate for 3-star hotels (81.1 percent) dropped by 4.9 percentage points.
As of the end of April, Macau had 143 hotels, an increase of 13 year-on-year. These hotels offer a total of 47,000 rooms, up 9.4 percent year-on-year.
The total number of hotel guests reached 1,159,000 in April, up by 5.6 percent year-on-year and 1.3 percent over the same month of 2019.
