Macau’s gross gambling revenue continued to show signs of improvement in May, boosted by the Golden Week holiday and gaining 492.2 percent from the same month last year.
According to figures from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), Macau’s casinos generated GGR of MOP10.44 billion ($1.3 billion), which is also higher than the MOP8.40 recorded in April.
For the year-to-date, GGR amounts to MOP42.48 billion, an improvement of 28.7 percent from 2020.
Although visitation gained and hotel occupancy was high during the five-day Golden Week holiday in May, analysts note that the guests were not high-spending gamblers. Recent Covid clusters and travel restrictions in China may also slow the recovery.
