Duterte calls for firing of officials in POGO-linked scam

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte wants to ensure that officials who accepted bribes in return for preferential immigration treatment for Chinese nationals working in Philippines Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) are punished.

About 43 immigration bureau officials were involved, with the Chinese companies allegedly paying about PHP10,000 in bribes.

The government has been cracking down on immigration and tax violations in the sector. It’s currently weighing a bill to impose a 5 percent franchise tax on gross gambling receipts to collect more revenue from the industry.
