The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified operations against scam hubs that have re-emerged as smaller, “guerrilla-style” networks following the government’s crackdown on Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), local outlet Inquirer.net reported.
In a statement on Sunday, PNP chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said authorities were verifying reports that scam hubs continue to operate in parts of the country through scaled-down networks. He said police had already dismantled a number of hubs but would press on to halt the illegal activity in the interest of public protection and the rule of law.
Former House quad committee overall chair Robert Ace Barbers had earlier raised concerns over the continued presence of suspected Pogo-linked groups that reportedly reorganized into less conspicuous operations. Barbers identified Baclaran, Binondo, and Parañaque in Metro Manila, along with Palawan and Cebu, as among the areas where the clandestine activities are allegedly taking place.
Nartatez said the PNP would maintain pressure on all scam hub operations by working with other agencies to strengthen intelligence sharing, surveillance, and coordinated enforcement.
In April, government agencies signed implementing rules to ensure the permanent closure of POGOs. The “Inter-Agency Standard Operating Procedures” enforce Executive Order No. 74, signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on November 4th, 2024, banning all POGOs and internet gaming licensees.
Authorities earlier reported that at least 100 “rogue” POGOs continue to operate covertly in houses, hotels, and resorts despite being ordered to cease activities by December 31st, 2024.
