Although the number of guests at Macau’s hotels decreased slightly by 3.8 percent year-on-year to 1,261,000 in August, this figure is nearly back to the levels recorded in August 2019 (99.7 percent).
According to the latest data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), there were 144 hotel establishments offering accommodation services at the end of August, reflecting an increase of eight from the previous year.
Despite the stable total number of available guest rooms at 45,000, the average occupancy rate improved by 2.8 percentage points year-on-year to 91.3 percent. Occupancy rates for 5-star hotels reached 93.4 percent, while 3-star hotels saw a significant increase to 90.8 percent.
While overall guest numbers saw a slight decline, international guests increased by 21 percent year-on-year to 73,000. Among these, visitors from South Korea rose by 40.3 percent to 26,000. The average length of stay for guests remained stable at 1.6 nights, showing a slight improvement of 0.1 night compared to August 2019.
Looking at the broader picture, the first eight months of 2024 have shown promising trends. The average occupancy rate of guest rooms has risen by 4.6 percentage points year-on-year to 85.5 percent. The total number of guests during this period grew by 12.9 percent year-on-year to 9,773,000, with their average length of stay holding steady at 1.7 nights.
Tour group visitors
Meanwhile, Macau’s inbound package tour visitors surged by 68.8 percent year-on-year to 224,000 in August 2024. Visitors from mainland China accounted for a significant portion of this growth, rising by 70.7 percent to 211,000.
Additionally, international tour visitors increased by 44.3 percent to 11,000, with notable increases from South Korea (5,000 visitors, up 61.4 percent) and India (2,000 visitors, up a remarkable 337.5 percent).
Inbound package tour visitors during the first eight months of the year reached 1,388,000, marking a remarkable increase of 127.6 percent year-on-year. Tour visitors from mainland China surged by 115.5 percent to 1,240,000, while international tour visitors jumped by 352.2 percent to 128,000. Visitors from South Korea and India saw staggering increases of 587.9 percent and 1,165.9 percent, respectively.
