The sportsbook solution supplier, DATA.BET, has prepared an analysis of betting activity during the FIFA World Cup 2026, the world’s biggest football event and one of the most-attended tournaments in history, attracting a combined 6.8 million spectators across 104 matches hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Pre-match betting accounted for 63% of turnover overall. In comparison, live markets held a steady 37% share throughout — a split that remained remarkably consistent over the six weeks, regardless of stage or opponent.
Stat-based markets accounted for over 11% of total turnover, highlighting their importance alongside traditional betting options. Corners Total emerged as the event’s most popular statistical market, ranking 10th overall by stake despite the dominance of core markets such as 1×2 and Totals.
Bettors also built increasingly detailed combinations through Bet Builder, regularly pairing Corners, Yellow Cards, and Team Totals with Anytime Goalscorer — a market sustained by consistent finishing from Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane.
At the team level, France generated the highest stake, ahead of Spain, Argentina, England, and Belgium — together, the top five teams accounted for 36.5% of the total stake, highlighting their strong popularity and betting appeal throughout the event.
Some of the tournament’s sharpest shifts in betting activity came from outside the traditional contenders. Cape Verde produced the group stage’s biggest surprise, while Egypt, led by Mohamed Salah, pushed Argentina to the limit in the Round of 16, a run that captured global attention and drove a clear rise in betting interest as it continued.
“The scale wasn’t just visible on the pitch — it showed in our numbers too. The combined betting turnover of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and the Intel Extreme Masters Cologne Major 2026 was split 58.5% to 41.5% in favor of the World Cup,” mentioned Yevhenii Ilchenko, Head of Sports at DATA.BET.
As the tournament progressed, betting activity intensified, with knockout matches generating nearly the same turnover and number of unique bettors as the group stage despite featuring fewer games. Average stakes during the play-offs were 28% higher, while the Semi-finals and Final delivered the tournament’s highest turnover.
Yevhenii Ilchenko added, “What made this World Cup stand out wasn’t one number — it was how consistently engaged bettors stayed for six straight weeks, till the final.”
