Macau hotel occupancy rate reached 78.6 percent in September: Govt

Macau’s hotel occupancy rates in September increased by 41.1 percentage points year-on-year to 78.6 percent, with the rates for 5-star (81.9 percent) and 2-star hotels (77.3 percent), according to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

The Asian gaming hub has a total of 137 hotel establishments that offered accommodation services to the public in September, an increase of 17 year-on-year. The total number of available guest rooms grew by 22.2 percent to 46,000.

Although the September figure significantly increases on a year-on-year basis, the average hotel occupancy rate is still below the summer levels. In June and July, the occupancy rate reached 89 percent.

Eight hotels under construction

According to the information released by the Land and Urban Construction Bureau, Macau has eight hotels under construction in 3Q23, which will offer a total of 3,137 hotel rooms. At the same time, another eight hotel projects are in the phase of design, which is going to offer 1,308 hotel rooms in the future.

The number of guests in hotel establishments in September reached 1,135,000, with mainland Chinese guests being the main contributors.

In the first three quarters of 2023, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms of hotel establishments went up by 43.1 percentage points year-on-year to 80.6 percent. The number of guests soared by 160.9 percent year-on-year to 9,793,000, while their average length of stay decreased by 0.2 nights to 1.7 nights.

In September, there were 133,000 visitors arriving on package tours.
