Passenger traffic through the Gongbei checkpoint, a key land gateway between Zhuhai and Macau, exceeded 64 million trips in the first half of 2026, up 6 percent year-on-year, according to the Gongbei border inspection station.
The checkpoint’s single-day passenger flow reached more than 460,000 trips during the period, with daily traffic records broken three times, the station said.
The border inspection station said mainland residents travelling to Macau have increased significantly since the start of the year, while daily commuting by Zhuhai and Macau residents has remained stable, making regular cross-border travel the main driver of passenger flows.
The trend comes as Macau’s tourism recovery remains heavily land-based. Macau recorded 40.07 million visitor arrivals in 2025, up 14.7 percent year-on-year, with 82.6 percent of visitors arriving by land, according to Macau’s Statistics and Census Service.
For the first five months of 2026, visitor arrivals climbed 11.1 percent year-on-year to more than 18.1 million. Same-day visitors surged 17.6 percent to about 11.25 million, while overnight visitors grew 2.0 percent to nearly 6.89 million.
The Gongbei station said summer traffic is expected to bring the year’s peak period, driven by student study tours, family travel and short cross-provincial trips to Macau. It said single-day passenger flows may again surpass the records set in the first half, supported by Greater Bay Area exhibitions, sporting events, cultural tourism exchanges and cross-border business activity.
