Success Universe Group Limited, an investor in Macau’s Ponte 16, has reported a challenging financial performance for the first half of 2024, marked by a sharp decline in profitability compared to the same period in 2023.

For the six months ending June 30th, 2024, Success Universe Group recorded a revenue of HK$32.5 million ($4.22 million), representing a significant decrease of approximately 52 percent from HK$68.4 million ($8.87 million) during the same period in 2023.

The company faced substantial losses in other areas. A fair value loss of HK$8.6 million ($1.12 million) on investment properties was reported, a stark reversal from a gain of HK$500,000 ($65,000) in the corresponding period last year.

Moreover, a significant fair value loss of HK$38.4 million ($4.98 million) was reported, a drastic shift from HK$105.5 million ($13.69 million) in profits in the first half of 2023.

The company’s administrative expenses rose by approximately 11 percent to HK$26 million ($3.38 million), up from HK$23.5 million ($3.05 million) in the first half of 2023.

Additionally, other operating expenses surged to HK$16.3 million ($2.11 million), compared to an income of HK$2 million ($260,000) in the same period last year.

As a result, Success Universe reported a loss from operations of HK$79.6 million ($10.34 million), a dramatic reversal from the HK$94 million ($12.21 million) profit recorded in the first half of 2023.

Ponte 16, the flagship integrated resort of Success Universe Group, was said to have leveraged the resurgence in global tourism to maintain its growth trajectory in 2024.

Sofitel, Ponte 16, Macau

In the first half of 2024, Macau witnessed a significant uptick in visitor arrivals, with a 44 percent year-on-year increase, reaching approximately 16.7 million visitors, or 82 percent of pre-pandemic levels.

The growth in Macau’s tourism has been bolstered by several government initiatives, including the extension of individual travel endorsements to more cities in mainland China and the introduction of the Hengqin-Macau multiple-entry visa policy.

‘Ponte 16’s focus on the mass-market segment aligns with this trend, ensuring its position as a leader in sustainable growth within Macau’s gaming landscape’, noted the company.

As of June 30th 2024, the casino of Ponte 16 had 109 gaming tables in operation, consisting of 103 mass tables and six high-limit tables.

The average occupancy rate of Sofitel Macau At Ponte 16 was approximately 85 percent, with about HK$134.7 million ($17.52 million) recorded in adjusted EBITDA for the first half of 2024, a drop of some HK$30 million ($3.8 million) from the same period last year.

Success Universe’s property investment segment has also faced headwinds in Hong Kong’s commercial real estate market, primarily due to high interest rates and geopolitical uncertainties.

As a result, the Grade A office vacancy rate climbed to 13.6 percent by mid-2024, with rental prices declining by approximately 2 percent year-on-year. The group reported a segment loss of HK$11.3 million ($1.4 million).

The company’s revenue from its travel business segment, via Canadian travel agency Jade Travel Ltd., also dropped 54 percent to approximately HK$31.2 million ($4 million).

The Star halts trading after new NSW authorities report maintains Sydney license suspension

0

Trading in the securities of The Star Entertainment Group Limited has been suspended at the company’s request after a report by the New South Wales casino regulator declared the group unsuitable to regain its Sydney casino license.

According to a dispatch from The Star, unless the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) decides otherwise, the halt will remain in effect until normal trading resumes on Monday, September 2nd, 2024, or until an announcement by the group is released.

The decision comes after a troubling inquiry that deemed Star Entertainment unsuitable to regain control of its lucrative Sydney casino.

The New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has published the second Bell Report regarding The Star and is now considering the future of the suspended casino operator. Two volumes of the three-volume report will be made public as the NICC reviews the findings of Mr. Adam Bell SC and their potential implications.

The first Bell Report, released in 2022, deemed The Star unsuitable to hold a casino license due to serious regulatory failures.

In that year, the state government imposed AU$100 million (US$68.1 million) in fines on The Star due to “major failings” at its casinos.

NICC Chief Commissioner Philip Crawford now stated that the latest report has confirmed the concerns that led to the second inquiry.

“The Bell Report reveals a company that has not acted swiftly enough to address the governance and cultural issues identified in the first report,” Crawford said. “It has only recently begun to focus on challenges that should have been prioritized earlier.”

Crawford acknowledged the experience of key executives, including Group CEO Steve McCann, Sydney CEO Janelle Campbell, and Group COO Jeannie Mok, in engaging with regulators and implementing necessary cultural changes. “Their expertise will be vital if the NICC decides that The Star should continue operating The Star Casino,” he added.

While Crawford noted improvements in transparency and cooperation since these appointments, he emphasized ongoing concerns about the accuracy of information provided by The Star. “It was unclear whether The Star could feasibly operate under less supervision given its past behaviors, especially with its license still suspended.”

The NICC is currently evaluating Mr. Bell’s findings, which include four compliance breaches, and plans to respond in due course.

The Star’s board has agreed to reimburse the full cost of the Bell Inquiry, totaling approximately AU$3.2 million ($2.1 million).

Experts at Asian Racing Conference address illegal wagering and gene doping

0

The session, titled “Integrity: Tackling New-Age Threats,” highlighted how evolving technology has fueled the rapid expansion of the illegal betting market, now valued at approximately $1.7 trillion.

According to an announcement from the conference, Martin Purbrick, chairperson of the ARF Council, emphasized the critical role of integrity in horse racing, stating that a lack of trust could lead to diminished public confidence and financial support for the sport.

Purbrick noted that many customers are migrating from legal betting platforms to illegal ones, undermining funding for racing.

Meanwhile, Tom Chignell, from The Hong Kong Jockey Club, discussed the tactics used by illegal operators to attract customers through online platforms and cryptocurrency, making transactions difficult to trace. He warned that these operators face no regulatory oversight, allowing them to exploit technology without ethical considerations.

Chignell also advocated for a data-centric approach to uphold integrity in racing, utilizing computer models and machine learning to monitor betting activities effectively, stressing that racing authorities must proactively manage these threats to maintain public confidence.

Ronan O’Laoire from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime outlined the interconnections between sports-related corruption and organized crime, emphasizing the need for a holistic understanding of these issues.

The official described various forms of corruption, including money laundering and illegal betting, as significant challenges.

In a shift to another emerging threat, Natasha Hamilton, director of Racing Australia’s Equine Genetics Research Center, addressed the issue of gene doping. She explained that advancements in gene therapies could be misused for doping, posing risks to both integrity and equine welfare.

Hamilton highlighted ongoing global research efforts to detect gene doping and the collaborative initiatives among racing bodies to develop regulatory frameworks.

The 40th Asian Racing Conference (ARC) runs until September 1st in Sapporo, Japan, with an extensive program centered on racing breeding, business leaders and key stakeholders.

In a different session titled “Betting: How Innovation is Changing The Future,” attendees discussed how World Pool has become crucial for the sustainability of racing globally. However, many jurisdictions continue to face significant hurdles.

Michael Fitzsimons, Executive Director of Wagering Products at The Hong Kong Jockey Club, emphasized the need to tackle the illegal wagering market. He suggested that racing could learn from the music industry’s successful collaboration against piracy.

“We must innovate together in a manner more compelling than the illegal alternative”, Fitzsimons stated, advocating for World Pool to cover the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities’ top 100 races.

Fitzsimons believes that by leveraging international Group 1 races, World Pool can help mitigate illegal gambling concerns. “We can’t and won’t stop until we have a convenient product with all the world’s best races in one place”.

The session also addressed the evolving regulatory landscape. Lachlan Fitt, CFO and Deputy CEO of Entain Australia and New Zealand, warned that his company may need to adjust its wagering offerings if further government regulations and taxes are implemented.

“We’re at a tipping point in Australia where our margins are already very thin,” he noted, predicting a potential decline in wagering turnover of 15 percent to 40 percent due to new advertising regulations.

Jason Scott, CEO of Racing Queensland, stressed the importance of understanding why customers are turning to illegal and offshore operators. “We need to learn from the illegal markets; they are growing because they can offer greater returns through lower takeouts and taxes,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Alex Frost, Co-Chair of the World Tote Association, called World Pool “the most significant innovation in pool betting” since its inception, noting a staggering turnover increase of over 400 percent since its launch.

SJM achieves positive EBITDA for satellite casinos for the first time since pandemic: CBRE

0

Analysts from CBRE Equity Research pointed out that SJM Holdings has improved its operation results thanks to reduced costs in satellite casinos and upgrades in its main properties.

The gaming operator announced its financial performance for the second quarter of 2024, with company losses narrowed by 87.2 percent, from HK$1.26 billion ($162 million) in 1H23 to HK$162 million ($20.8 million) in the first half of 2024.

SJM also reported a 20 basis point increase in its overall gross gaming revenue (GGR) market share, reaching 12.6 percent.

According to CBRE analysts, this growth is attributed to improved cross-selling and operational synergies facilitated by the company’s “One SJM” platform.

‘Management indicated that market share continued to expand in July, rising to 13.5 percent, with expectations for sustained growth throughout the second half of the year’, the brokerage added.

SJM’s satellite casinos reported GGR of HK$2.6 billion ($338 million) in 2Q24, slightly surpassing expectations. More notably, Property EBITDA became positive, contributing HK$23 million ($3 million) for the quarter.

SJM operates nine satellite casinos, including Casino Casa Real, Casino Landmark, Casino Emperor Palace, and Casino Grandview.

‘This marks the first period of EBITDA profitability since the onset of the pandemic, significantly outperforming prior loss estimates’, the dispatch indicated.

The improvement is largely attributed to reduced staffing costs, which decreased from a daily run rate of HK$1.1 million ($143,000) in 1Q24 to HK$0.6 million ($78,000) in 2Q24.

The Grand Lisboa Palace (GLP) has also shown significant momentum, with mass market GGR climbing 22 percent sequentially to HK$750 million ($97 million).

Grand Lisboa Palace, SJM Resorts, Macau

The property achieved an EBITDA margin of 8.6 percent, resulting in HK$104 million ($13.5 million) of Property EBITDA.

‘The addition of four new casual dining establishments has contributed to increased foot traffic, while an expanded sales team is actively seeking to attract more premium customers’, read the CBRE dispatch.

GLP’s total GGR market share grew by 20 basis points to 2.2 percent, with a further increase of 30 basis points in July, bringing it to 2.5 percent.

Management plans to open two additional casual restaurants and a food court in the latter half of 2024, which may slightly raise operational expenses but is expected to enhance revenue and drive margin expansion.

SJM is also focusing on renovations at the Grand Lisboa (GL), including the introduction of more casual dining options in 2H24, converting junket areas into hotel rooms, and increasing retail space slated for 2025.

With GL currently operating at full occupancy, the addition of more rooms is anticipated to generate additional revenue and further improve margins. A new VIP gaming area opened in 2Q24 has already contributed to increased VIP GGR in July.

Return to the world of Gemix to seek priceless gemstones

0

Play’n GO invites fans to return to this glorious kingdom to stake their claim on spectacular stones in Gemix 100.

Here, players will find an abundance of sparkling gemstones across the land, just ripe for the taking. Venturing across the kingdom, they’ll find themselves coming across vast mines where the Miner and his friends excavate these precious gems; the Princess’ Kingdom where she oversees the realm with care, and the Wizard’s home where he conducts his valuable research on the magnificent minerals of the land.

During the base game, players will hit spin on a 7×7 grid filled with gems. Wins are created by creating clusters of symbols that link both vertically and horizontally. These wins fill the Crystal Charge Meter which will unleash special effects across the grid when reaching certain levels to enhance wins.

Fans of Gemix (2014) and Gemix 2 (2021) will be thrilled by returning features as well as the various departures from other titles. One feature in particular for Gemix 100 relates to the number 100 in the title. This isn’t just a number, and in fact refers to the increased cap on the game’s multiplier where players can now earn 100x of their win values!

Head of Game Retention at Play’n GO, George Olekszy, said: “Our Gemix series is incredibly popular and being able to create a new entry, as well as one for the 100 series, too, is something we’re very proud of.
