Another Indonesian influencer charged for promoting online gambling

0

Indonesian authorities have arrested another social media influencer accused of promoting online gambling sites, marking the latest in a growing number of prosecutions targeting digital content creators involved in the country’s ongoing online gambling crackdown.

Police in the Hulu Sungai Utara (HSU) Regency charged a 22-year-old woman with several offenses related to the promotion of illegal gambling portals. Local outlet Radar Lamongan reported that Nab has admitted to accepting payment in exchange for uploading promotional videos containing links to online casino platforms.

According to investigators, one of the videos included images of online casino games. Nab, who has around 25,400 followers, listed her availability for product endorsements in her Instagram bio. Police said she received gambling-related promotional material via WhatsApp from an individual using the alias “Queen Fanta Slot.”

Officers from the Criminal Research Unit of the North Hulu Sungai Police Force reportedly searched Nab’s residence, seizing her phone, items of clothing allegedly used for filming, and access to her e-wallet and Instagram account. The e-wallet, operated through local payment app DANA, was allegedly used to receive payments from the intermediary.

Authorities said Nab will be charged under provisions of Indonesia’s gambling and electronic transactions law, which was amended in 2024 to include e-payment channels linked to gambling activity. The promotional posts have since been deleted but were originally uploaded in September. The case follows a series of similar arrests involving young female influencers accused of using their social media profiles to market gambling sites.

Earlier this month, the Denpasar District Court sentenced 19-year-old influencer Vienna Varella Angeli Parinussa to 18 months in prison and fined her IDR30 million ($1,812) after she was found guilty of taking payments to post gambling links on Instagram. The sentencing sparked public outrage after Vienna was photographed making an obscene gesture outside the courtroom.

In August, another influencer, Nia, aged 21, from Buleleng Regency, received a 10-month jail term and fines totaling IDR6 million ($362) for similar offenses. The court cited leniency in her sentencing due to her role as the primary caregiver of a young child.

SJM strengthens Southeast Asia tourism ties with promotions in Indonesia and Malaysia

Macau casino operator SJM Resorts has stepped up efforts to attract Southeast Asian tourists, after taking part in the ‘Experience Macao Mega Sale’ events in Indonesia and Malaysia earlier this month, amongst a government-led push to expand Macau’s tourism reach.

The promotional roadshow, organized by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), ran from October 9th to 12th at Jakarta’s Gandaria City Mall and IOI City Mall in Kuala Lumpur.

SJM said the events offered a platform to showcase its flagship properties — Grand Lisboa Macau and Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau, which features three luxury hotels, including The Karl Lagerfeld Macau and Asia’s first Palazzo Versace Macau.

SJM’s booths featured interactive games, lucky draws, and photo opportunities with its mascot ‘Sam the Rooster’. The company also offered hotel packages combining luxury stays, fine dining, family ‘edu-tainment’ activities, golf access and art exhibitions to promote Macau’s ‘Tourism+’ concept of cross-sector experiences.

As part of the initiative, SJM hosted two luncheons for travel industry professionals — one at The Westin Jakarta and another at the Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur — bringing together more than 80 representatives from airlines, travel agencies and MICE planners.

The sessions included presentations on SJM’s latest developments, quizzes with prizes, and discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation and tailoring travel products for Southeast Asian markets.

SJM said the events helped deepen understanding of regional travelers’ preferences and reinforced Macau’s image as a ‘World Centre of Tourism and Leisure’, in line with the Macao SAR Government’s strategy to diversify its tourism sources.

‘Through these engagements, SJM continues to build stronger connections with the Southeast Asian travel trade and promote Macau’s world-class hospitality offerings,’ the company said in a statement.

As the Asian gaming hub continues to be heavily dependent on the mainland Chinese market, the Macau government has been pushing efforts to increase the share of non-Chinese tourists in the city, with local gaming operators now regularly participating in international promotional events with the city’s tourism authorities.

Despite these efforts, international visitors represented only 7 percent of the total 19.2 million tourists that came to Macau in the first half of this year, the same percentage reported by the same period of last year, with the majority hailing from mainland China or Hong Kong.

Philippine gaming regulator, privacy commission team up to boost data protection

0

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) and the National Privacy Commission (NPC) have signed a deal to strengthen data privacy safeguards and regulatory compliance across the country’s gaming industry.

The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Monday at PAGCOR’s headquarters in Pasay City, marking a coordinated effort to address data protection challenges in a sector handling vast amounts of sensitive information.

PAGCOR chairman and CEO Alejandro H. Tengco said the agreement underscores the state-run gaming firm’s commitment to safeguard the personal data of its employees, licensees and gaming patrons.

“This MOU with the NPC is a vital step in aligning PAGCOR’s policies with the evolving data privacy landscape,” Tengco said in the announcement. “It reinforces our duty to protect personal information while ensuring our operations remain transparent and compliant.”

He added that the collaboration would also facilitate the creation of a national database of government officials and employees barred from gambling in casinos and other gaming establishments. “This forms part of our commitment to promote responsible gaming,” he said.

NPC chairman and privacy commissioner John Henry Naga praised PAGCOR’s initiative, calling inter-agency cooperation essential for maintaining data security in high-risk industries.

This partnership highlights that protecting citizens’ personal data is not only a regulatory requirement but also a mark of excellence in the gaming industry,’ Naga said.

The initiative grew out of a privacy training workshop for state-owned firms, where PAGCOR’s data privacy officer Maria Concepcion Gloria-Rubio proposed a framework to boost compliance.

Under the MOU, both agencies will launch joint programs on privacy awareness, capacity building and policy development to enhance governance standards and public trust in the Philippines’ gaming sector.
