Singapore Changi Airport records strongest year ever with about 70M travelers

0

Singapore Changi Airport handled about 70 million passengers in 2025, setting a new annual record and marking its highest passenger throughput since opening, according to Singapore transport authorities.

The figure surpasses the airport’s previous peak in 2019 and confirms a full recovery from the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2025 passenger total exceeded traffic recorded in 2024, reflecting sustained growth in international and regional travel demand through the year. Officials said the increase was driven by a continued rebound in global air travel, expanded airline capacity, and Singapore’s role as a key transit hub in Asia.

According to The Straits Times, Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow said at an event on January 5th that the milestone demonstrated the resilience of Singapore’s aviation sector and the effectiveness of long-term planning. He noted that passenger volumes had not only returned to pre-pandemic levels but had moved beyond them, underscoring renewed confidence in air travel.

Changi Airport’s strong performance in 2025 also comes as work progresses on Terminal 5, a major expansion project intended to support future growth. Once completed, the new terminal is expected to significantly increase the airport’s handling capacity and introduce more advanced automation and digital systems. Authorities have indicated that construction is advancing in phases, with further tenders to be launched in the near term.

Terminal 5 is designed to raise Changi’s overall annual passenger capacity to around 140 million when fully operational. The project forms part of Singapore’s broader strategy to maintain its competitiveness as a global aviation hub amid intensifying regional competition and evolving travel patterns.

Beyond infrastructure, aviation officials have highlighted improvements in connectivity and airline partnerships as contributing factors to the rise in passenger numbers. The airport added and restored routes throughout 2025, particularly across Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East, supporting both point-to-point and transfer traffic.

The record passenger figures carry wider implications for Singapore’s tourism, retail, and services sectors, which benefit from higher visitor flows. As international travel continues to normalize, authorities said they expect demand to remain firm, supported by economic recovery and ongoing investments in airport capacity and technology.

GKL sees 2025 casino sales grow 8% despite softer December

0

South Korea’s foreigner-only casino operator Grand Korea Leisure Co. (GKL) reported an 8 percent year-on-year increase in casino sales in 2025, supported by growth in both table games and slot machine revenue, according to its interim business performance disclosure.

GKL posted full-year 2025 casino sales of KRW425.33 billion ($294.3 million), up from KRW393.69 billion ($272.6 million) a year earlier. Table games remained the core revenue driver, generating KRW385.49 billion ($266.8 million) for the year, a 7.5 percent increase year-on-year. Slot machine revenue rose at a faster pace, climbing 13.1 percent to KRW39.44 billion ($27.3 million).

The growth shows a steady recovery in foreign visitation to South Korea over the course of the year, with GKL’s performance widely viewed as an indicator of inbound tourism trends, particularly among Japanese and Chinese travelers.

In December alone, GKL recorded casino sales of KRW36.30 billion ($25.1 million). Of this total, table games accounted for KRW33.07 billion ($22.9 million), while slot machine revenue reached KRW3.23 billion ($2.2 million). On a year-on-year basis, December casino sales declined 6.4 percent compared with the same month in 2024, as table games revenue fell 7.4 percent, partly offset by a 5.6 percent increase in slot machine takings.

Month-on-month, December casino sales were down 13.0 percent from November, reflecting a softer performance toward the end of the year.

GKL also disclosed that the amount of drop, or customer purchases of gaming chips, totaled KRW3.73 trillion ($2.58 billion) for the full year, representing a 1.5 percent increase from 2024. December drop amounted to KRW330.37 billion ($228.6 million).

GKL operates two casinos in Seoul, at Gangnam Coex and Hilton, as well as one casino in Busan. The venues cater exclusively to foreign visitors, positioning the company as a key gauge of international tourism demand in South Korea’s gaming sector.

Paradise Co. Ltd. reported a 9.9 percent year-on-year increase in casino sales for the full year of 2025, driven by stronger table game and slot machine revenue across its foreigner-only casino portfolio in South Korea, according to a regulatory filing released on Monday.

Total casino sales for 2025 reached KRW900.5 billion ($623.6 million), up from KRW819.6 billion ($567.2 million) a year earlier. Table games remained the group’s primary revenue source, generating KRW846.3 billion ($585.7 million) for the year, while slot machine revenue totaled KRW54.2 billion ($37.5 million).

In December, Paradise Co. recorded casino sales of KRW75.4 billion ($52.2 million), representing a 5.4 percent decline from November but a 7.6 percent increase compared with the same month last year.

Monthly table game revenue came in at KRW69.8 billion ($48.3 million), down 7.8 percent month-on-month but up 5.2 percent year-on-year. Slot machine revenue reached KRW5.6 billion ($3.9 million), rising 40.3 percent from November and increasing 49.3 percent year-on-year.

Paradise Co. operates four foreigner-only casinos in South Korea: Walkerhill in Seoul, Paradise City in Incheon, Busan Casino, and Jeju Grand. The company’s performance continues to reflect South Korea’s post-pandemic tourism recovery, supported by improving inbound travel, particularly from Japan and Southeast Asia.

Paradise Co. has previously emphasized that table games remain its core revenue driver, while slot machine performance tends to show greater month-to-month volatility.

Rockets and Mavericks to hold NBA pre-season games in Macau

The Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets will face off in two NBA pre-season games in Macau next October, as announced by the league.

Scheduled for October 9th and 11th at the Venetian Arena, these games follow the NBA’s return to China last year, which featured matches between the Phoenix Suns and Brooklyn Nets.

NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to engage fans in China and across Asia, highlighting the strong passion for basketball in the region.

In addition to the games, the event will include youth clinics, a fan area, and social impact programs focused on health, wellness, and sustainability, enhancing community involvement.

This matchup is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen NBA ties with China following past tensions stemming from a controversial tweet by former Rockets general manager Daryl Morey in 2019.

Two pre-season games were held at The Venetian Cotai Arena between the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns last year, marking the first time in six years the NBA has officially been in Macau and is part of a five-year contract between Sands China and the American basketball giant.

Daily Asia Gaming eBrief: New Philippine gaming fees set to consolidate market

Good Morning. Weeding out the chaff. Meanwhile, Fitch Ratings has assigned a ‘BB-‘ rating to SJM Holdings’ proposed senior unsecured notes, citing concerns over the company’s weakening performance at the Grand Lisboa Palace resort and market share dilution, while highlighting uncertainty around its deleveraging progress despite expected balance-sheet improvements by 2027.

Philippines targets inefficient online gaming operators with new fees

The Philippines’ recently announced minimum guaranteed fee (MGF) for online gaming operators aims to eliminate inactive licensees rather than simply raising revenue, according to industry expert Tonet Quiogue. Starting April 1, 2026, all licensed gaming system administrators (GSAs) will be required to pay a fixed monthly fee to encourage operators who generate little economic activity to exit the market. The two-tier fee structure sets minimums ranging from PHP3 million to PHP10.5 million, depending on the type of operation, while compelling struggling operators to disclose their business models and performance.
