Macau will incorporate large-scale drone shows into its annual international fireworks contest for the first time, deploying more than 3,400 drones across the opening and closing nights.

The 34th Macao International Fireworks Display Contest will run across five nights from September 12th to October 4th, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO).

The event will feature two fireworks displays at 9 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. on September 12th, 19th and 25th, as well as October 1st and 4th. Each display will last about 18 minutes.

The drone performances will open the first fireworks night and conclude the final night, with more than 3,400 drones used across the two shows.

Ten fireworks companies from Brazil, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, Portugal, South Korea, Thailand, China, the Philippines and the United Kingdom will take part. The Brazilian, Swiss, Italian and Portuguese teams will be competing in Macau for the first time.

The September 25th displays will coincide with the Mid-Autumn Festival, while the October 1st program will mark China’s National Day.

MGTO said the contest forms part of its efforts to expand Macau’s event calendar and support the city’s tourism and nighttime economy.
