The number of conventions and exhibitions held in Macau fell more than 70 percent compared to 2019, with the sector’s revenue falling around 53.7 percent from the prior year, according to the Statistics and Census Services Bureau.

However, the MICE sector has shown signs of recovery coming out of the fourth quarter of 2020, with a total of 147 MICE events and 515,000 MICE visitors.

In the first quarter of 2021, the number of MICE events rose 71.7 percent from 2020.

For years, the Macau government has been trying to build out its international MICE market in order to attract business travelers.

Macau gaming scholar Desmond Lam said it is expected that as connectivity with the Greater Bay Area improves, so will Macau’s attractiveness as a MICE destination.
