Genting Singapore: no plans to pursue bid for Osaka or Japan IR

Genting Singapore confirms it is fully out of the race for a potential IR in Japan, noting in a pre-AGM release that the company ‘previously pursued a bid to develop an integrated resort in Yokohama City, but this was discontinued when Yokohama City decided to cancel the […] integrated resort bid process’.

Questioned on whether there would be any interest by the company in Osaka – Genting Singapore noted that ‘the company is not currently pursuing a bid to develop an integrated resort project in Osaka or in Japan’.

Genting was just one of many operators who had expressed interest in Japan (partnering with a consortium including Sega Sammy) – including Las Vegas Sands, Melco Resorts and Entertainment, Caesars Entertainment, Hard Rock International, Suncity Group, MGM Resorts and Casinos Austria, among others.

Only the last two contenders remain in the running – with MGM’s partnership with ORIX Corp the most likely to be able to pursue its long-held IR dreams in the nation.

Genting Singapore, like many other contenders, dissolved its subsidiaries in Japan at the end of 2021, as the various potential cities hoping for integrated resorts fell prey to political shifts and negative public opinion on IRs.
