The Star Entertainment Group has appointed Dave Whimpey as Chief Operating Officer and Interim Chief Executive Officer of The Star Brisbane, subject to regulatory approvals, as the company continues to reshape leadership at its integrated resort operations.
The appointment was announced in a LinkedIn post by The Star Brisbane on Monday, which said Whimpey joins the property ‘at a pivotal time’, as the business enters a new phase following the opening of the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane precinct.
Whimpey brings more than 25 years of experience across the gaming, hospitality and tourism sectors. He began his career at Jupiter’s Casino before moving into senior leadership roles with professional services firm KPMG, wagering operator Tabcorp, and retail group Coles – formerly part of Wesfarmers.
Most recently, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Surf Life Saving Queensland. Prior to that, he was CEO of Brisbane Racing Club.
“I’m excited to be joining The Star at such a pivotal time as the business embarks on a new era focused on rebuilding, revitalization and restoring confidence,” Whimpey said in the announcement.
“There is a significant opportunity ahead, and I’m committed to working closely with the refreshed Board, management and our professional team members to contribute positively to the city’s future and the communities we are part of.”

The Star Brisbane is located within the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development, which opened in August 2024 as the group’s third integrated resort after The Star Sydney and The Star Gold Coast. The project is owned by Destination Brisbane Consortium, with The Star holding a 50 percent interest (which it is in the process of trying to divest).
The appointment comes as The Star Entertainment Group reshapes its executive team. Earlier last week, the company named veteran casino executive John Koster as CEO of The Star Sydney, pending regulatory approval.
