- Authorised for New Zealand: every brand reviewed here operates under New Zealand law, either as part of TAB NZ or as the national lottery operator.
- Local markets first: strong coverage of the All Blacks, Super Rugby Pacific, the NPC, the Warriors, the Black Caps and New Zealand thoroughbred and harness racing.
- Banking in NZ dollars: card, mobile wallet and bank payment options that New Zealand customers actually use.
- App quality: a clear mobile layout and quick bet slips.
- Control tools: deposit limits, spend caps, breaks and exclusion options that can be set from inside the account.

TAB NZ
Sports and racing

Our screenshots of tab.co.nz, taken in New Zealand on 22 October 2026.
TAB NZ is the home of sports and racing betting in New Zealand. It runs betting under the Racing Industry Act 2020, and since 28 June 2025 it has been the only provider allowed to offer online racing and sports betting to people in the country. Day to day, its wagering and broadcast operations are run in a long term partnership with Entain, the global betting group that took on that role in 2023.
The product mixes the old and the new. Racing fans still get tote pools with dividends alongside fixed odds, plus classic bets such as the Quaddie, while the sports side leans on modern features like Same Game Multi, Same Race Multi, Flex Multi and Money Back Odds offers. Rugby sits at the centre of the sports menu, with All Blacks tests, Super Rugby Pacific and the NPC priced in depth, and there is wide cover of international football, cricket, basketball and the NRL.
Alongside the app and website, TAB still runs a retail network for punters who prefer to bet over the counter. The account dashboard holds a full set of control tools, from deposit and stake limits to curfews and a take a break option.
Pros
- Tote pools and fixed odds on New Zealand racing
- Same Game Multi and Flex Multi on major sports
- Deposits by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Online EFTPOS or bank transfer
Cons
- New members can deposit only up to NZ$500 in the first 7 days until ID checks are complete
- No online casino games in the TAB account

Betcha
Sports and racing

Our screenshots of betcha.co.nz, taken in New Zealand on 22 October 2026.
Betcha is TAB NZ’s digital sister brand. It was created through the TAB NZ and Entain partnership as an online only offer, and the Department of Internal Affairs lists it as one of TAB’s brands under the rules that keep online racing and sports betting within TAB NZ.
The idea is a second, app first shop window for punters who never visit a TAB outlet. It covers the same core ground of rugby, league, cricket, football and New Zealand racing, wrapped in its own branding and layout. The same age rules apply as at TAB, and a self-exclusion set with one Entain NZ brand covers the others.
Pros
- Built for mobile, with no retail clutter
- Rugby, league and racing markets in one account
- Operates within the TAB NZ framework
Cons
- No retail outlets for cash bets
- No online casino games

The online wallet is simple to run. Best NZ Betting Sites for Rugby, Racing and More
The New Zealand betting calendar follows the oval ball and the racetrack. The first half of the year belongs to Super Rugby Pacific, the middle of the year to the All Blacks, and the provincial NPC and the big spring race meetings follow, before summer turns to the Black Caps and the main cups on the thoroughbred circuit. TAB NZ prices every one of these events, together with a steady flow of overseas sport through the night.
Rugby Betting: All Blacks, Super Rugby and the NPC
No sport moves Kiwi punters like rugby. Test matches involving the All Blacks draw the biggest interest, but Super Rugby Pacific and the provincial NPC fill the weekends in between. Beyond the match result, the common markets are the line (a points start for the weaker side), total points, winning margin bands, first try scorer and anytime try scorer. Same Game Multi stacks several of these on one fixture.
Horse Racing: Thoroughbred and Harness
New Zealand runs two codes today: thoroughbred racing and harness racing, the latter known locally as the trots. Commercial greyhound racing closed from 1 August 2026, so local race betting now centres on the gallops and the trots, with Australian and international meetings filling the card. Racing bets can be placed on the tote, where the dividend depends on the size of the pool, or at fixed odds, where the price is locked in when the bet is struck.
League, Cricket and International Sport
The Warriors give rugby league fans a home team in the NRL, the Black Caps bring Test, one day and T20 cricket, and netball has a loyal following around the Silver Ferns. Thanks to the time difference, European football and the NBA fill the early morning markets.
NZ Bet Types You Will See
- Head to head: back one side to win the match outright.
- Line: a points handicap that evens up a lopsided contest.
- Multi: two or more selections in one bet, with every leg needing to win.
- Same Game Multi: several outcomes from a single match combined into one bet.
- Flex Multi: a TAB multi that can still pay a reduced cash return if one or two legs miss, in exchange for a lower top dividend.
- Quinella and Trifecta: race bets that pick the first two or the first three runners.
- Quaddie: a race bet that needs the winners of four nominated races.
Online Casino New Zealand: Real Money Casino Games
Real money casino gaming in New Zealand runs through three channels: land based casinos, pokies in pubs and clubs, and online play, which is in the middle of a major change.
Online Pokies NZ
Pokies are New Zealand’s favourite casino game. Outside the casinos they sit in pubs, hotels and clubs as class 4 gaming machines, run by corporate societies that must return a share of the proceeds to the community as grants for sport, schools and local groups. Players must be 18 or older to play class 4 pokies. Inside the five casinos, the machine floors are larger and sit alongside the table games. A pokie result is set by a random number generator, and wins are paid when matching symbols line up on an active payline.
Table Games: Blackjack, Roulette and Baccarat
Blackjack, roulette, baccarat and poker are dealt at New Zealand’s casinos. In blackjack the target is a hand closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Baccarat is the main game in premium rooms, where players back the player hand, the banker hand or a tie and the cards are drawn by fixed rules.
Real Money Online Casino Sites in New Zealand
Online casino gaming is now governed by the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026, which passed its third reading on 23 April 2026, received assent on 28 April 2026 and came into force on 1 May 2026. The Act creates a licensing regime run by the Department of Internal Affairs with up to 15 online casino licences. Each licence covers a single brand, runs for up to three years with the option of renewal for a further five years, and no one can hold significant influence over more than three licences. No online casino licences have been issued yet, and the Department expects to start issuing them from early 2027.
The licences were allocated through an ascending clock auction held from 29 September to 12 October 2026. It drew 32 bidders, ran for 10 rounds and closed at NZ$15 million per licence, with 11 entities winning the right to apply, among them TAB New Zealand and two SkyCity companies. Each winner still faces a full assessment, and approved brands will appear on a public register and carry a registration icon.
In the meantime, the Act sets clear dates. Since 1 May 2026, online casino gambling may only be advertised to people in New Zealand under a licence, which means promotion of unlicensed online casinos to New Zealand residents is not allowed. From 1 December 2026, online casinos that have not applied for a licence must stop offering their games in New Zealand, while applicants may keep operating without advertising until a decision on their application, and no later than 1 June 2027. Offshore online casinos are not licensed in New Zealand. Licensed operators must check that players are at least 18 and may not offer credit for play.
Online Lottery and Instant Games
Instant Kiwi on MyLotto is currently the closest thing to an online casino game run from inside New Zealand. The Online Casino Gambling Act keeps lottery games protected for Lotto NZ, so future licensed online casinos may not offer games substantially similar to, and likely to compete with, a protected New Zealand lottery.
Best Casinos in New Zealand to Visit
For a night on a real casino floor, New Zealand has five operating casinos, from the Sky Tower complex in Auckland to a historic hotel building in Dunedin. The Gambling Act 2003 bars any new casino venue licences, although existing licences can be renewed, so this short list is unlikely to grow.
| City | Casino | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland | SkyCity Auckland | Part of the SkyCity complex at the foot of the Sky Tower in the central city |
| Hamilton | SkyCity Hamilton | SkyCity’s casino for the Waikato region |
| Queenstown | SkyCity Queenstown | Beach Street venue in the resort town; the separate Wharf Casino has stayed closed since 2020 |
| Christchurch | Christchurch Casino | Victoria Street in the central city |
| Dunedin | Dunedin Casino (Grand Casino) | Set in the historic Southern Cross Hotel building at Princes and High Streets |
What to Expect on a New Zealand Casino Floor
The casino gaming areas are strictly for adults aged 20 and over, a higher age than for pokies in pubs or betting with TAB, and staff check photo ID at the door. The age rule applies to the gambling area itself, so restaurants, bars and hotel spaces outside it follow their own entry rules. Each venue can also issue exclusion orders on request, covered in more detail below.

NZ Online Casino and Betting Payment Methods
Money moves in NZ dollars, and the options vary a little between brands.
| Method | TAB NZ | MyLotto |

| Apple Pay and Google Pay | Yes | Not listed |
| Online EFTPOS | Yes | Not listed |

Fast Deposits for Kiwi Punters
Card and mobile wallet deposits land fastest, while bank transfers take longer. TAB does not allow a card that is already linked to another TAB account or registered in someone else’s name, and new members can deposit up to NZ$500 within the first 7 days until their ID check is complete.
How to Join a NZ Betting Site
- Pick a brand that serves New Zealand. For sports and racing that means TAB NZ or its sister brand Betcha; for the national draws and Instant Kiwi it means MyLotto.
- Open your account. Enter your legal name, date of birth and New Zealand address. You must be 18 or older to bet with TAB.
- Verify your identity. A New Zealand driver licence or passport is the usual document. Until TAB completes its ID check, deposits are capped in the first week.
- Set your limits. Choose a deposit limit at TAB or lower your MyLotto spend limit before you start.
- Make a deposit. Use a card, mobile wallet, Online EFTPOS or bank transfer, depending on the brand.

Taxes on Gambling Winnings in New Zealand
Recreational players in New Zealand generally do not pay tax on gambling winnings. Inland Revenue states that winnings from Lotto, raffles and prize draws are generally not taxable, and the same applies to TAB winnings on horse and harness racing. The exception is prize money won as part of a taxable activity, such as a professional’s winnings, which belongs in that person’s tax return.
