Tourism sector advocates for adjustments to Thailand’s casino plan

Members of Thailand’s tourism industry are calling for modifications to the government’s proposed integrated entertainment complex plans, which includes casinos, aimed at stimulating economic growth.

According to The Bangkok Post, while many in the sector support the initiative, they suggest changes to laws and regulations to enhance its viability.

Weerawit Krueasombat, president of the Patong Entertainment Business Association, believes that a comprehensive casino complex could attract investors and boost economic circulation, particularly in suburban areas like Thalang, near Phuket Airport.

Similarly, Hua Hin’s Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul supports the project but emphasizes the need for airport expansion to accommodate international flights.

On the other hand, some stakeholders question the necessity of a casino. Thanet Tantipiriyakit, president of the Phuket Tourist Association, argues that the island’s natural beauty should be its main attraction, not a casino, and expresses concerns over the potential social impacts and the involvement of large foreign investors.

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat indicated that the entertainment complex bill is progressing, with further reviews needed before submission to the cabinet. Overall, while enthusiasm for the project exists, significant concerns regarding its implementation and potential consequences remain.

Thailand’s prominent coalition party, Bhumjaithai, has recently reiterated its support for the proposal to legalize casinos but expressed concerns about the potential for monopolies to dominate the industry and capture most of the benefits.
