Macau March visitor arrivals down 19.6% from Feb.

Macau visitor arrivals in March fell 19.6 percent from the prior month due to the resurgence of Covid in Mainland China, according to figures from the Statistics and Census Service.

The total number of tourists was 526,912, a decline of 30.2 percent from the same month a year earlier. 

Same day visitors rose to make up the majority of those entering the city, while higher-spending overnight visitors were down 61.2 percent. The average length of stay shortened by 0.4 day to 1.2 days due to the higher proportion of day trippers. 

During the month 70.2 percent of visitors came from the border city of Zhuhai.

In the first quarter of 2022, number of visitor arrivals increased by 8.0 percent year-on-year to 1,876,847. Same-day visitors rose by 46 percent year-on-year, while overnight visitors fell by 25.9 percent. 

Prior to the pandemic in 2019, Macau recorded visitor arrivals of about 40 million.
