The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has revealed that Macau’s gaming sector experienced a dramatic increase in receipts, soaring by 308.1 percent year-on-year to MOP188.52 billion ($23.5 billion) in 2023.
This surge reflects the sector’s strong recovery, bolstered by the resumption of travel activities and the easing of pandemic restrictions. Receipts from games of chance alone jumped by 335.9 percent, reaching MOP183.60 billion ($22.88 billion) and returning to 63 percent of pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
Total expenditure in the sector, excluding taxes, rose significantly by 98.6 percent to MOP80.06 billion ($10 billion). This increase includes substantial rises in operating expenses and other cost categories.
Expenditure on complimentary goods and services, such as hotel accommodation and food and beverages, grew by 365.1 percent, reaching MOP19.51 billion ($2.43 billion). Spending on management services and contractual services grew by 234.6 percent to MOP5.4 billion ($673 million), while market research and publicity expenses increased by 232.2 percent to MOP2.09 billion ($260 million).
Economic contributions from the sector also saw substantial growth, with Gross Value Added rising by 345.8 percent to MOP135.37 billion ($16.87 billion) and Gross Surplus (before taxes) soaring by 896.5 percent to MOP115.20 billion ($14.35 billion).
