The board of governors of the Malta Gaming Authority has selected Charles Mizzi as its new chief executive officer. The industry newcomer will take up the position on the 26th of January 2024 and shadow outgoing CEO Carl Brincat until that time.

Mizzi was the CEO of the Residency Malta Agency, the Government agency responsible for managing the Malta Permanent Residence Programme. As he leaves this post, he will be replaced by deputy chief Jonathan Cardona.

“I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to lead the authority.”

“I am keen to build on past successes and, together with the team under the guidance of the minister responsible and the board of governors, to strategically steer the authority forward so that Malta’s already robust position in the field may be further strengthened while delivering value to all stakeholders.”

Silvio Schembri, Minister for the Economy, EU Funds and Lands congratulated Mizzi on his appointment, as well as thanking Dr. Brincat for his service.

“With his vast experience in managing the operations of a number of entities and his contributions towards major projects, Charles Mizzi is undoubtedly the right candidate to continue building on what the MGA has achieved so far, and lead his excellent colleagues within the Authority towards further future success,” the Hon. Minister Schembri said.

Mizzi’s appointment comes during a time of rising challenges for the Mediterranean gambling licensing jurisdiction. Having only recently been removed from the FATF grey list, the island is grappling to maintain its position, with competitors like the Isle of Man trying to out-maneuver it on speed and business friendliness, while Curacao is snapping at its heels with a desire to join the ranks of Tier 1 jurisdictions.
