The coronavirus outbreaks in various Mainland Chinese provinces, and the new entrance restrictions in Macau, have resulted in the cancellation of 20 percent of room reservations in hotels in Macau. In particular, the need for all air travelers to display a negative nucleic acid test result, taken within 48 hours of arrival, has been cited by industry insiders as a major reason for the cancellations. The hotel occupancy rate in June only reached 45.3 percent, with pre-outbreak estimates that August hotel occupancy could reach up to 70 percent. Hotel operators say they’re hoping the outbreaks should only affect occupancy rates during the first half of August.
