Police in southern Malaysia have conducted 525 raids and arrested 705 individuals involved in online gambling in the first half of 2021, according to local reports.

Johor police chief Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said that 549 were operators of premises whilst 156 were players.

Last month, Johor police made a rather large bust, arresting a total of 118 individuals involved in online gambling syndicates in a series of raids from July 15 to July 31.

Ayob Khan said around 90 premises were raided throughout Johor, a majority of which were shop house premises.

Ayob Khan said the syndicates were targeting victims from all walks of life, including students, government employees and senior citizens.
