Macau still attractive but Philippines drawing strong interest among gaming suppliers and operators: G2E Asia

0

Gaming operators and suppliers are eager to know more about the Philippines market, G2E Asia organizers indicated when debuting the Macau offerings coming up in May.

As preparations ramp up for the G2E Asia and Asian IR Expo 2025, set to take place in Macau between May 7th and 9th, Vera Ng, Project Director at Reed Exhibitions (RX), shared insights into the event’s future direction and the strategic decision to expand into the Philippines.

RX plans to bring G2E Asia back to the Philippines for the first time in six years, with a two-day expo scheduled for December 10th and 11th, 2025, at the Manila Marriott Hotel, part of the Newport World Resorts casino complex.

“We’re seeing a surge in new developments and projects in the Philippines, and many suppliers are eager to penetrate this market,” she explained, adding that the move is intended to provide a dedicated platform for exhibitors focused exclusively on the Philippine market, with an expected 50 exhibitors participating in a more “intimate setting”.

Organized by the American Gaming Association (AGA) and Reed Exhibitions, G2E Asia made its debut in 2007.

Usually held in Macau, G2E Asia was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, before returning as a much smaller event at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore in 2022. The 2023 edition was split between the two gaming hubs – with Macau focusing more on non-gaming, while last year the conference returned solely to Macau, again with a strong IR focus rather than its traditional offerings.

This year decided to include both a May event in Macau and a December one in the Philippines, a choice that could be controversial given the feedback from 2023.

With a growing number of expos in the region, and in the Philippines, Ng acknowledged the challenge of competition. However, she emphasized that G2E Asia’s positioning sets it apart.

“Our Macau event is supported by a robust network of land-based suppliers, and we leverage our expertise to create tailored content for the market,” she noted. This differentiation aims to maintain a strong foothold in an increasingly saturated event landscape.

Non-Gaming as a Core Direction

G2E Asia

The Thursday press conference at the Macau International Golf clubhouse offered more details on the May event, including the presence of executives from Sands China and Galaxy Entertainment Group alongside representatives of Macau’s tourism, cultural and business authorities.

This year’s event will be split between The Venetian Macau and Galaxy.

The event organizers expect the dual events will feature a 50 percent increase in space, accommodating over 150 exhibitors across 30,000 square meters and anticipating more than 10,000 industry professionals from 80 countries. This year’s program includes personalized business meetings, networking events, and educational programs alongside the traditional panels.

The Asian IR Expo has broadened its scope to include sectors such as IR Technology & Solutions, Live Entertainment, Sports & Entertainment, Green Hotel Supplies, and Travel Suppliers. Meanwhile, the Asian IR Summit will address the integration of non-gaming components, future technologies, and the evolving landscape of sports and entertainment in the industry.

Despite a clear larger focus on non-gaming elements – aligned with Macau and China’s government goals to diversify the local economy – Ng denied that the conference is “moving away from gaming” and stated that the gaming component of the 2025 edition has actually increased from last year’s edition.

Countering concerns that a focus on non-gaming elements may alienate some clientele, Ng reassured stakeholders that gaming remains a significant component of the expo.

“In fact, the gaming portion has been growing. This year, we’re seeing an increase in the space dedicated to gaming, driven by both traditional gaming operators and innovative technology providers,” she stated.

Ng highlighted the emergence of new technology solutions, such as smart table solutions and integrated systems. “As the market becomes more complex, the demand for integrated solutions continues to rise”.

She also expressed optimism about the expo’s future for the coming 10-15 years, bolstered by strong support from the Macau government and the industry. “We are confident in our ability to sustain this event.

“This expected growth reflects our commitment to expanding our offerings and meeting the demands of our exhibitors and attendees alike,” she concluded.

G2E Asia faces an uphill battle with the rise in gaming-related events throughout Asia. This year could provide key metrics on whether bigger (and multiple-location) events are better, and what operators and suppliers are truly looking for in their expo experience.

Daily Asia Gaming eBrief: Trump-China tensions to have little impact on Macau

0
Good morning. As the US presidential inauguration looms, analysts are wary as to whether Macau operators will face a similar situation as the last time China-US tensions hit an all-time high. But given the drastic shift in the make-up of Macau’s clientele, with the evisceration of the VIP market, concerns have been slightly alleviated, and expectations are for a continuation of growth seen in 2024. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, analysts at Maybank have cut forecasts for Bloomberry’s 2025 revenue, as competition increases and gaming results fail to excite.

US-China relations to have little impact on Macau

While many lauded the election of Donald Trump to a second term as US President, and the subsequent stock rally, US-facing gaming operators in Macau were quickly reminded of the tensions with China during his last time in office. Analysts at Deutsche Bank argue that such expected tension should have a minimal impact, but argue the difficulty in comparing 2025 to 2018 due to the virtual disappearance of Macau’s VIP sector.

US-China relations under new Trump administration to have little impact in Macau: Deutsche Bank

Deutsche Bank analysts have maintained a positive outlook for the Macau gaming market in 2025, despite lingering geopolitical tensions and competitive pressures.

In a recent report by Deutsche Bank analysts Carlo Santarelli and Steven Pizzella, the brokerage forecasts Macau’s GGR to grow by 5.3 percent in 2025, slightly below the consensus estimate of 7.4 percent.

Geopolitical concerns, including US-China relations in the new Trump administration, continue to loom over Macau’s casino sector, but Santarelli and Pizzella argue that these issues will have little direct impact on Macau’s fundamentals, despite heightened sensitivity to such factors affecting investor sentiment.

The report draws parallels to 2018, when US-China trade tariffs coincided with a challenging year for Macau stocks. However, the reduced importance of the VIP market today makes such correlations less relevant, note the analysts.

“One can surmise that the tariff implementations in 2018 had an impact on the VIP market in 2019, though, given the reduced importance of the VIP market today, and the confluence of other factors impacting the VIP market in 2019, we don’t believe this is a rational concern”, the analysts concluded.

US-China relations under new Trump administration with little impact in Macau

Santarelli and Pizzella believe that Macau’s long-term fundamentals remain attractive, driven by a steady recovery in visitation and mass market expansion, citing expectations for continued growth in gross gaming revenue (GGR) and steady improvements in market fundamentals.

However, they acknowledge investor concerns over potential geopolitical disruptions and the intense competition that hindered profitability in 2024.

“While the fundamental impediments that drove negative revisions in 2024 are accounted for in our forecasts, questions remain about whether GGR will drive stock performance in 2025,” the report states.

Look back at 2024

For Deutsche Bank, Macau’s 2024 performance was a mix of recovery and underperformance, with GGR growing by 23.9 percent year-on-year, aligning with market expectations but falling 22.5 percent short of 2019 pre-pandemic levels.

The mass gaming segment saw significant growth, with GGR up approximately 25 percent year-on-year and 10 percent above 2019 levels. However, the VIP segment lagged, with GGR up 21 percent year-on-year but still down 60 percent from 2019.

Despite these gains, Macau casino stocks underperformed in 2024, with the Deutsche Bank analysts attributing this to eroded profit margins caused by heightened competition in the mass market and geopolitical uncertainties impacting sentiment toward US-listed operators in Macau.

“Mass competition intensified as the VIP segment contracted, and the flow-through on incremental mass GGR was weaker than expected,” the analysts noted.

Hotel room supply also remained a key restraint for Macau’s recovery, as renovation projects and a limited development pipeline kept room supply growth muted, with 2024 ending with fewer rooms year-on-year.

The average occupancy rate of Macau’s 44,000 hotel rooms in the first three quarters of 2024 exceeded 85 percent – an almost 5 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023.

“Year-end 2024 Macau market room supply will be lower Y/Y, with limited meaningful development on the horizon. As such, from a capacity perspective, with the exception of some rooms coming back online, some smaller scale new room openings, and the longer-term potential Galaxy Phase IV opening, the supply pipeline looks relatively healthy for harvesting existing, and presumably growing, demand”, the analysts added.

“This constraint, combined with recovering visitation levels, supports a favorable environment for operators seeking to maximize occupancy and revenue”.

Macau’s visitation grew 25 percent year-on-year in 2024 but remained 12 percent below 2019 levels. Reduced arrivals from mainland China—down 13 percent from 2019—were a major factor, though a marked improvement in the latter half of the year provides hope for sustained growth in 2025.

Push Gaming unveils ancient Egyptian mysteries in “Mystery Of The Nile”

0

Played across 5×3 reels, the base game sees numerous fan-favourite mechanics return, such as Mystery Stacks, along with a reveal feature which can unveil instant win coins, collectors and multipliers.

These will be available alongside Push Bet™, the provider’s proprietary ante bet mechanic, empowering players to personalise the gameplay experience.

Free spins are triggered by landing at least three scatter symbols. A bonus pop-up can award multiple Mystery Stacks upon entering the feature, which remain locked throughout the duration of Free Spins.

Every additional Mystery Stack awards an extra spin, with at least three of these needed on the reels to trigger the Mystery Stack Reveal feature, guaranteeing wins on every remaining spin. Each symbol revealed will have its associated multiplier doubled in the progressive multiplier meter, boosting win potential.

Multiple bonus buy options are available where permitted, featuring a variety of free spin options. These include random free spins, with up to five scatters able to be won and a full screen of Golden Pharaoh symbols awarding instant cash prizes, multipliers, collectors and bonus round access.

Expanding upon the proven formula and success of the Mystery series, Mystery Of The Nile augments the franchise with new mechanics blended with a popular theme that underscores Push’s high-quality releases throughout the coming year.

Jack Wood, Senior Game Producer at Push Gaming, said: “Mystery Of The Nile evolves the ever-popular Egyptian genre and delivers a fresh take on a familiar setting. Blending these aesthetics with beloved elements from the Mystery series has allowed us to combine a classic theme with innovative mechanics to deliver a crisp, new experience.

“Enhancing the features in the franchise has seen the introduction of a progressive multiplier meter to the free spins round, bringing dynamic gameplay to the title.

“We are excited to see the reception this release receives from players and look forward to them unveiling many of the updates we have added to it.”
