Philippine Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has urged for an investigation by the Senate into the growing presence of foreign nationals within exclusive gated communities.

The foreigners in question are suspected to be affiliated with Internet Gaming Licensees (IGLs), previously known as Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs).

Gatchalian, a member of the Nationalist People’s Coalition, highlighted the apprehension voiced by residents in the gated community of Multinational Village in Parañaque City regarding the emergence of what appears to be an enclave exclusively accommodating foreign nationals.

The politician emphasized the need for scrutiny and underscored the importance of ensuring that any significant concentration of foreign individuals does not serve as a front for illicit activities, particularly given the surge in criminal incidents associated with individuals involved in the gambling industry.

Referring to a recent National Bureau of Investigation raid on a residence in Ayala Alabang Village, Muntinlupa City, wherein 11 Chinese nationals were apprehended for allegedly orchestrating illegal online gambling operations, the senator expressed deep concern.

He remarked on the possibility that these residents in upscale subdivisions may include fugitives from other countries, asserting that such syndicates are adept at navigating the local landscape, potentially enjoying protection from influential figures.

Gatchalian, a vocal proponent for the discontinuation of ILG operations within the country, emphasized the adverse societal repercussions outweighing any economic benefits purportedly associated with them.
