Hotel occupancy in Macau reaches 79 percent in May, with available rooms grew by 10 percent

Macau continued to see strong hotel room occupancy rates in May, reaching 78.9 percent during the month, up by 44.6 percentage points yearly. The total number of available guest rooms grew by 10 percent to 43,000, with 130 hotels in the city. 

Of the various types, 3-star hotels saw the highest occupancy rate, at 81 percent, up by nearly 37.4 percentage points yearly.

Five-star hotels saw a 47.6 percentage point uptick to 79 percent, while four-star properties rose by 41 percentage points to 80.1 percent.

According to Macau’s Statistics and Census Service, the number of guests of hotel establishments in May leaped by 140.3 percent year-on-year to 1,104,000, with mainland China and Hong Kong being the key source markets.

Macau’s hotel received 793,000 guests from mainland China, jumping 133 percent from last year, 199,000 from Hong Kong and 17,000 from Taiwan, whereas local guests (42,000) dropped by 51.8 percent—meanwhile, the average length of stay of guests extended by 0.1 night year-on-year to 1.6 nights.

In the first five months of 2023, the average occupancy rate of hotel went up by 39.4 percentage points year-on-year to 76.7 percent. The number of guests soared by 122.8 percent year-on-year to nearly 5 million.

In May, Macau welcomed 79,000 visitors arriving on package tours, down 18.6 percent from 97,000 recorded in April. Meanwhile, 35,000 Macau residents purchased outbound services through travel agencies, an uplift of 988 percent yearly.
