Macau visitor numbers fall 93.7% in March, length of stay increases

The number of visitors to Macau fell by 93.7 percent year-on-year to 212,311 in the month of March, due to the continued impact of COVID-19 on inbound travel.

The number, however, represents an increase of 35.8 percent from February, according to the Statistics and Census Bureau, with visitors arriving from Hong Kong via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge sourcing 131.3 percent.

The average length of stay went up by 1.8 days to 3.0 days, with overnight visitors prolonging their stay by 2.5 days to 4.7 days.

The number of Mainland visitors, unsurprisingly, plummeted by 96.3 percent to 88,890, with those arriving under the Individual Visit Scheme down 99.4 percent.

While it is currently unclear when travel restrictions will ease, analysts from Bernstein on Monday forecasted that restrictions may begin to lift in late May / June.

The number of visitors in March brought total visitor arrivals to Macau in 20Q1 to 3.2 million, a fall of 68.9 percent year-on-year.
