Andhra Pradesh calls for ban on rummy and skill games

A number of political parties and social groups in Andhra Pradesh have become vocal in calling for a ban on online rummy and skill-games after various incidents of addiction and loss of money came to light.

According to local media, CPI state secretary K Ramakrishna recently wrote a letter to chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy seeking a ban on online rummy. In the letter, the state secretary cited the example of a head cashier of a public sector bank who allegedly used the bank’s funds to play the game and was apprehended.

BJP state vice-president S. Vishnuvardhan Reddy in his letter wrote that youth were being misguided by advertisements issued by online gaming companies which promised lucrative returns on the investments they make. This has caused even educated youth to become addicted to online betting, he wrote.

The Rummy Federation has however defended the industry, claiming that the federation was focused on responsible, secure and fair gaming. It maintains that the federation has put a set of norms in place to regulate the online rummy industry, which it says is in compliance with global standards.
