Hong Kong protests still a looming threat: Vickers

Hong Kong’s civil unrest is not yet over and threatens to flare up as the virus recedes, according to a report from Steve Vickers and Associates.

The anti-government protests had been raging in Hong Kong since June of last year, which was sparked by a bill that would allow Hong Kong citizens to be extradited to mainland China.

Last week, the Hong Kong police arrested a number of prominent pro-democracy figures, including Martin Lee Chu-ming, a barrister and activist, Albert Ho Chun-yan, former chairman of the Democrat Party, and Jimmy Lai Chee-Ying, the owner of Apple Daily, a major opposition newspaper, amongst others.

The arrests related to the arranging of and participating in unauthorized protests in 2019.

“The large-scale arrests of pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong on 18 April 2020 have underlined how tensions are still boiling away, notwithstanding the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak,” said Vickers in a report.

The risk advisory said that businesses should prepare for potential further political unrest.
