Lottery sales plummet in Jan, could be zero in Feb

China lottery sales plummeted 43.3 percent year-on-year in January, due mainly to a shutdown of most lottery operations on January 22 to observe annual Spring Festival celebrations.

Said lottery sales fell to RMB27.2 billion, (US$3.9 billion), with welfare lottery sales down 39.3 percent and sports lottery down 46.4 percent.

While lottery operations were due to restart on February 9, it is understood that the shutdown has yet to be lifted, meaning that February lottery sales could amount to zero should it continue.

China’s welfare and sports lottery are the only legal avenues of gambling permitted in the country.
