Hong Kong closes several major border crossings

Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam on Monday announced the closure of a number of border crossings with China, with exception of the Shenzhen Bay joint checkpoint, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, and the Hong Kong International Airport.

Effective at one minute past midnight on Tuesday, a total of 10 crossings have been suspended under the order of the chief executive, including land border crossings at Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau and the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal.

The decision follows an earlier move to shut some border crossings and high-speed rail services.

According to the latest government statistics, Hong Kong has 15 confirmed cases of the virus.

On Monday, more than 2,500 medical staff went on strike over anger with the government handling of the coronavirus outbreak, demanding that the government close all entry points from Mainland China.
