Research on COVID-19 impact on gaming to launch

Responsible gaming researcher Sally Gainsbury is preparing to launch a research study on the impact of COVID-19 on gambling in Australia.

The research aims to investigate the impact of the coronavirus shutdown on gambling participation and the experience of gambling problems in Australia. It builds on research conducted earlier in 2019 which found that debt stress had a significant role in explaining the link between problem gambling and distress, depression, poor wellbeing, and adverse family impacts relating to problem gambling.

Other researchers involved in the study include Professor Alex Blaszczynski, and Thomas Swanton from the Gambling Treatment and Research Clinic and the Technology, Risk, and Mental Health Team within the Brain and Mind Centre and School of Psychology at the University of Sydney.
