Parts of Beijing lock down as new Covid infections grow

Parts of the Chinese capital, Beijing, have been put under lockdown after a spike of new Covid-19 infections were detected.

According to the World Health Organisation, 41 symptomatic cases were confirmed and 46 without symptoms as of June 13.

Most of the cases were linked to the Xinfadi Market, which has now been closed down. Several housing estates close to the market have also been shut down.

All cases are in isolation and under care as needed, and contact tracing is underway, the WHO said. Genetic sequencing of samples is also underway and rapid sharing of these results is important to understand the origin of the cluster and links between cases.
