Asia Gaming Brief’s Mekong Gaming Summit wrapped up with a tour of some of the casino properties in the southern coastal town of Sihanoukville. The area is in the grip of a massive construction boom fuelled, mostly by Chinese capital, as factories seeking a lower cost base relocate from Mainland China. Investment under Beijing’s  “belt and road” initiative is also boosting growth.  Out of the 133 operating casinos in Cambodia, 61 are in Sihanoukville and 46 percent of new license applications received in the first half of  2019 has been for the area, according to government figures. Further applications have been received in Q3, despite negative publicity about crime, environmental degradation and safety standards. Many of the casinos are small operations, with online gaming driving the bulk of revenue, however, some of the newer, luxury resorts springing up are undoubtedly high quality and give some credence to the “new Macau” label that...
