Yokohama Mayor Fumiko Hayashi, previously known to support the idea of integrated resorts, has formally announced she will run for reelection against a candidate opposed to casinos, according to local sources.
Hayashi had previously favored hosting an integrated resort in the city to spur economic growth, but later admitted it would be difficult to formulate detailed IR plans, according to an article by the Japan Times written earlier this year.
Osaka, Tokyo and Yokohama are emerging as the likely cities to host casino resorts. Casino operators have also expressed their favouritism for the three cities due to their high population and proximity to international airports.
China’s threat to draw up a blacklist of countries targeting gambling is most likely directed at the online industry, though may be enough to deter some travellers even if the government doesn’t follow through with its action.
A second Australian regulator said it has begun disciplinary proceedings against casino giant Crown Resorts Ltd CWN.AX after media reports accused it of failing to vet foreign gamblers, a second watchdog to take action over the claims.
