Mass exodus of Chinese nationals from Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville

Sources in Sihanoukville estimate around 10,000 Chinese citizens have left the city in the past few days, according to a report from the South China Morning Post.

One-way tickets to China are sold out and the airport has been packed, they said.

The coastal town was filled to the brim with Chinese nationals working in the online gambling industry, and supporting businesses.

As many as 95 percent of all businesses in Sihanoukville was Chinese owned, it was reported.

However, the recent announcement by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to ban online gambling has sent shockwaves across the industry, turning the once-thriving town into a ghost town.

The future of Cambodia and online gambling will be discussed thoroughly at the Mekong Gaming Summit, held from 10-11 September in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
